He’ll be missed when he’s not on comms, the voice of Stoke.

Nigel represents the words to our song, "We'll be with you every step along the way." He's been with us through all the highs and lows of the last few decades and like every true Stokie, he's felt the disappointments just as we have. I understand perfectly why he's decided to retire. I'm a couple of years older than Nige and for some of us at that age it becomes too much, healthwise, to continue to do the same things we've found it easy to do over the years. (As an ex-Boothen Ender, I know how much bloody hard work it is to negotiate all the steps to my seat at the back of The Boothen.) I'm going to miss the picture he paints with his commentary and every single one of his isms. Whatever, from one Old Stokie to another, I wish Nige all the best for the future and thank's Nige for everything you've contributed to the 'Stoke City Experience' over the years.
All best, Owd 'Un.
OS.

A bit like the 1st team currently are, 'turgid' at best. I'm probably alone in thinking that some of his histrionic commentating was embarrassing. The "Lip of the centre cirtle", for example, what it footballing parlance does it mean?

Well done Nigel on a lifetime of sterling service to the City, its club and the fans. I've met you a few times and you've always been a true Stokie - but, equally importantly, a true gentleman. I have nothing but admiration for your decision to stick at your second career until age 79 - I took early retirement from my one and only career when I was "only" aged 58 so you have shown much more staying power than I ever did! All the best - and let's hope Stoke's performances soon start to improve for the sake of your sanity and mine!

Good Luck Nigel, voice of Stoke City, you've been amazing 👏
Whatever comes next I can already hear Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi playing 'They paved paradise and put up a parking lot'!

It's like losing the Queen, regardless of politics, it's the loss of a staple in the Stoke diet.
I'll miss the unforced errors and unique pronunciations of exotic names (like Sue Tar)
Hopefully the club will give him a free season ticket, but then again, after 44 years of watching us he deserves less punishment in his twilight years

Few things at Stoke transcend an era when my Grandad, My Dad, Myself (aged 56) and now my own son supported Stoke and Nigel is one of them
I will always remember the occasion when Stoke were away somewhere distant and my Grandad, my Dad and myself would listen to Nige on the 'wireless' with my Grandad bemoaning how much better we were in his day (and this would have been the early 80's when we were in the 1st Division !)
Nigel is Stoke through and through and when he finally puts down the microphone I hope it is in the knowledge that he is loved and cherished by so many of us who appreciate greatly all he has done to enrich our Stoke supporting lives.

I admire him for sticking the season out tbh, sign of a true professional subjecting himself to this torture.
All the best Nige.

The "Lip of the centre cirtle", for example, what it footballing parlance does it mean? Ever heard of the phrase "a time and a place"? All the best Nigel. I got to know him personally when he was arranging printing for the SSMF. A very nice man who I enjoyed chatting with on the occasions I met him.

I will miss listening to the man, the legend Nigel Johnson on the wireless . ..I suppose it’s better to retire at the top of your game …. Can you train up a few of the others before you go please, as I will miss hearing Red and white stockings, and centre cirtle …. The job you have done over all these years is amazing, I have always enjoyed listening to you on match day,it won’t be the same without you. Maybe you could do the odd guest appearance for old times sake ?

I remember listening to a commentary game, Shawx was struggling with his back injury …….. Our Nige " he’s struddling badly in the centre cirtle". Listening to the radio commentary on Sunday the Mrs was sat reading half listening to the game .."what’s the centre cirtle in football for?" I had to give an explanation of Nigel Johnson to which she said "why doesn’t he just go to for speech therapy if he is a prominent local radio commentator?" But that’s his trademark and one reason why he is so well liked.

I wonder if the club will do anything to mark this last home game of the season maybe a presentation and past players in attendance.

In hope of it not being too cheesy wouldn’t it be a nice touch to re-name the press box or a media area of the ground after Nigel Johnson. I always think it’s nice to honour people in this way whilst they are still living and I can’t think of many people more deserving that such an accolade than Nigel Johnson. Having his name live on in a part of the stadium that has been his home from day one would be very fitting.
