I agree with your thoughts on this matter, I find that Nigel Johnson is embarrassingly poor in his commentary on too many occasions. He's in his eighties now I believe, surely someone with higher authority should tell him, diplomatically, that it really is time to go. In your opinion. In mine he should stay on as long as he wants to. Nigel is, as much as anyone, a legend of our club. I understand the frustration of younger supporters coming through. Everything is instant. Everything can be checked that moment. Someone was wrong and thus, should be held accountable. The greatest ever, Leslie Thomas John Arlott OBE. Raymond Baxter OBE Graeme Murray Walker OBE Not one, I would imagine, suitable to change their skill set for today. Yet each, a poet. Arlott once said he waited for ever to just say ‘Rice bowls….and Paddy Fields’ Nige should hang it up when Nige wants to, and even then, if we have any major cup/final/event/promotion he should be wrapped up in cotton balls and be placed center cirtle in all the commentator asides he wishes to make. Should I start the campaign for his MBE or should someone local?

If Nige retires or is put out to pasture the Oatcake would soon find somebody else to pick fault with.
To me he is a part of the furniture and can stay as long as he wishes.
I am convinced that he reads the Oatcake. It always amused me when he mentioned Stokes strip and the colour of their STOCKINGS. I mentioned it a few times on similar threads and now he doesn’t do it anymore.
If you are reading this Nige can you on Boxing Day get Stockings and Oatcakes into one sentence ? It would make our Christmas.🤪

Wouldn't be the same without him. Pejic on the other hand ...

There's a reason that some match journalists cover football and commentary on matches for live radio feed and some do it for the TV coverage. Similar in nature but actually different disciplines when it comes to actually delivering the matchday experience. This is the main reason why Sam Matterface is fucking terrible as he's primarily a radio commentator. There are some however who are good at both - Connor McNamara, Guy Mowbray, Darren Fletcher and this fair city's very own Tom Gayle. Legend that he is though, Nige is no longer competent and for me, it's heartbreaking to hear him blunder through each 90 minutes, a shadow of his former self. Needs retiring (and a statue of him outside the press entrance at the ground).

Find another team. The club is part of the culture of another town. Sorry but Man city has nothing to do with Manchester if it's owned by Arabs. The club is hardly working with the city, they may do things for the people of the city but that's like investing in your own business base. Stoke city FC do not give a shit if there is a new shopping center or bus station etc. They barely give a shit about their stadium, or the fans wishes. What's all the fuss about.. Anyway, the club has a lot to do with the commentaries on their own stream. That's what most of us in the 21st c watch if we can't attend the game. The lack of effort is astonishing. And no, sadly I can't just 'find another team'. That's not how being a fan works is it? You obviously know nothing about the town, the club or its owners, time to find another club.

This idea that he's a "shadow of his former self" confuses me tbh, I've been listening to him at least 30 years and I've never known him to be any different. He was never a polished media product, he's always had his eccentricities and turns of phrase and lapses of memory and unique pronunciations, it's part of why we've always loved him.

Totally contrived commentary with pre-rehearsed lines that he shoehorns into his commentary. like 'Do cry for me Argentina' ..... wtf was that about!...you just couldn't get any more Partridge-esque. I think he's awful.

There is a young lad who does You Tube on Stoke every match day,(can't think of his name) but he is really good, knows what he is talking about,he could hold his own when taking to the players too.
