Was suffering with cancer for a long time . Don't know much about him apart from that album with Roger Daltrey which he said he wanted to make due to his deteriorating health.

The cancer thing was misdiagnosed and ended up being benign if I remember rightly. Saw him about 5 years ago at a festival in Cornwall. A brilliant guitarist with a unique style and that strange way he moved around the stage made for an excellent gig. A sad sad loss. RIP Wilko and thanks for the music. Edit: Just read up and I got the cancer thing wrong. He recovered through surgery after being told it was inoperable. My bad.

Saw him in Leamington Spa a few years ago, brilliant performer and just as wired as he ever was.....very sad about this, utterly unique guitar style that while ostensibly quite simple was difficult to emulate. RIP.

Was suffering with cancer for a long time . Don't know much about him apart from that album with Roger Daltrey which he said he wanted to make due to his deteriorating health. Was cleared/cured of that after a cancer specialist down here in Cheltenham, who happened to be a massive Wilko fan, read about his treatment, contacted the great man to air his concerns that he was being treated for the wrong type of cancer, and subsequently went on to cure him. The initial terminal diagnosis prompted the 'going home' album. The story behind the recovery is what makes this sudden passing all the more saddening. Mark Radcliffe was a massive Dr Feelgood fan,and if memory serves, was afforded the honour of recreating the 'Down by the Jetty' cover standing in for the late Lee Brilleaux, with the remaining original members of the band?

Difficult to describe just how pivotal his career really was.
A man who was renowned as a musicians musician and created a massive bridge between the aging ‘pub rock’ scene and the burgeoning punk rock movement.

That is a shame.
The story of his cancer survival is fascinating. How he'd reconciled to dying and because of that saw incredible energy and beauty in everything. Then, as someone else said, a medical specialist who was a fan contacted him to say you need to get reassessed because the truth is you should be dead by now! Did so and had a massive tumour removed which hadn't spread.
Saw him in Stratford years ago. Wasn't particularly a fan of that 'pub rock' genre of music but his guitar playing style made for a beguiling stage presence.

There's a great documentary about his initial diagnosis and the surprise of surviving it. A good few years old now.

Massively influential - You can hear him in so much of the punk and new wave stuff that followed. There was a great clip of an interview with him when he was being asked about how he created his guitar sound:
'I plug it into that amp.'
'What about pedals?'
'I'm a guitarist, not a cyclist.'
