That's the fucker! Nice one, mate... Was it really late 70's? Christ, I thought I was going too far back by saying late 80's, hence me adding in it might have been early 90's! Lol that was first thing came in to my head but i dismissed it cos it was 70s 😅 Same

Oh yeah... same notes, same key change. I wonder if it was intentional or unconscious. George Harrison claimed that My Sweet Lord being a rip off of this Chiffons one was unconscious... I'd go for intentional - but I doub't we'll ever know as Ravenscroft is no longer with us. Still - would have been an interesting court case - for while 'Baker St' was estimated to have earned Rafferty £80k a year for life in royalties and airplay - Ravenscroft was paid a one off session musician's fee of £27.50! I tend to agree with you there. And RIP fellow Stokie Raphael x And that's astounding, and makes me feel sad, you'd really think Jerry could have sorted him something out, considering that sax break probably made that song the hit it was. The music industry really is a lottery

The music industry really is a lottery Apparently he bore him no ill will and continued touring with Rafferty for a number of yesrs afterwards. There are a number of stories like that. McCartney bought out Denny Laine cheaply for writing credits on Mull of Kintyre while Sting kept all the royaties from 'Every Breath You Take' (one of the biggest grossing songs ever) despite Andy Summers guitar hook being a large part of the song. Summers is less than pleased. On the other hand there are heartwarming stories. Frankie Valli was about to give up music as he was making no money. His flat mate said he'd come good someday if he kept at it and was earning enough as (I think) a teacher to keep them both so offered 50% of his wages until Valli made the break. Valli initially declined but the friend said 'Look - we'll go 50/50 now - if you come good in a couple of years we'll go 50/50 on your money. If you don't you don't owe me anything' The shook hands and Valli came good and has honoured the deal for the rest of his life. When asked in later life why he never tried to buy the friend out he said 'A deal is a deal - and anyway - without his part of the bargain I would never have made anything'.

Interesting that while there's no ill will there, in a similar situation Summers is less than pleased. I guess not knowing the actual circumstances and relationships we can't really judge either. Yes that is a very heartwarming story with Frankie Valli, I love that! Can't help thinking Denny Laine was a bit daft there though. But again, don't know the full story. I would've thought owd Macka was rich enough mind. Weird one that.

However - it's coming up to that time of the year again so can mention another Stokie - Jem Finer of the Pogues. Born in Stoke, went to Keele University and co-wrote 'The Fairytale of New York' with Shane McGowan. I have no idea how much it made him.

That's cool a Stokie in the Pogues though! Love that band. Saw them at the Hood Fayre in Devon in 83, playing on a stage in a clearing in some woods. I was under the influence of the Devon scrumpy cider it was brilliant fun! I imagine it made him a fair few bob! Wonder if them covering Dirty Old Town was his idea lol
