Oh how I loved that atmospheric place.
This plastic Lego stadium we’re currently housed will never hold a candle to that cathedral of football.

Last night was atmospheric compared to plenty of nights at the Vic. Resembled Coventry Cathedral during the war in later years Agree that the Vic was far from always electric. However... On a quiet night at the Vic I think the background noise was more evident and the crowd remained a distant but more active presence. Ex players confirm this. The equivalent night at the Brit is graveyard silent. Possibly to do with standing vs sitting, possibly to do with passive folk on phones. My hunch? Pre season card/ sitting culture taking off... it was easier to gravitate towards people and parts of the ground that suited you. Added a bit more life to the place. |

Years ago if you were shown a photo of football grounds,most of the time you would guess correct who played there,nowadays they mostly look the same.

I'm convinced that some modern supporters arrive at the ground with arms folded waiting for their online opinions/ predictions to validated on the pitch. They'd deny this of course! Previously these folk might well have arrived more pent-up having 'kept it all in' since the last match. Unless letters to the Oatcake/ Sentinel allowed spleens to be vented adequately... |

I agree, that ground under the Waddington era until the Butler Street stand blew down, must have like being visiting God in his own home. |

Being a bit youngish I have limited memory of the Vic unfortunately. At the time (early - mid 90’s I found it to be proper grim, a reflection of our standing at the time I suppose. In the premier league, at the Brit with a full house against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United etc that was different gravy. A memory I’ll never forget.
So whilst our ground seems utterly soulless right now it has been proven to be a belter atmospherically and hopefully will be again in my lifetime

Standing in a large, noisy, boisterous crowd could be quite visceral, equally, feeling a tad lonely in sub 10k crowds was less inspiring...but you still went, still let rip and still hoped for better. It rarely came but Mickey Thomas scoring from distance with blood running down his socks was something to behold! It's not our current stadium that is the cause of the lack of atmosphere....
And, as much as I have fond memories of our former home, I prefer what we have now, with all its faults.
As stated above, the Brit was electric during large parts of our latter-day golden era, that it is mostly flat as pancake in more recent times has a different cause...

Still have some trigger memories associated with the Victoria Ground.
Firstly, whenever my feet get wet I think of the car park on a night match or end of a Saturday winter match when it had been raining…..a potholed car park with craters of water and no lights. You never knew you were stepping into a foot deep puddle until the sensation hit you.
Next…pipe tobacco smell triggered by being stood in the Boothen End when old blokes would puff away on a pipe. Lovely sweet smell I can taste to this day.
Lastly, seeing street lighting on during driving rain or fog. Reminds me of looking at the old floodlights, reaching up from the ground into the sky like the Martian ships in War of the Worlds and seeing the rainbow coloured halos they produced exaggerated by the mist and rain.
When I encounter any of these sensations I just close my eyes and I’m transported back forty years.

It’s all down to the football on offer and the circumstances. Say what you like about the atmosphere at the Brit/365 but that first season back in the Prem produced as much noise as the Vic ever did

I remember it being pay on the gate for the night game against 'bag of shite' and Gary Newbon was there with Central cameras, lets just say the Boothen End was above capacity. |

As much as I loved the Vic I honestly don’t think it was ever as loud in there as the Britannia was when we were in the premier league. There something about the Brit which allows for the chants to echo and swirl across the ground, maybe it’s the wind? Not many clubs can be as loud as us on our day.
