The midlands teams in the top two divisions aren’t going well at the moment. In the Premier league all 4 clubs are in the bottom 4 positions and in the Championship all in the bottom half. I know I’m getting old but I remember watching Star Soccer with Hugh Johns in the day and seeing Stoke, Forest, Derby, Villa, Brum, West Brom & Leicester all right up at the pointy end of the table. Can’t see it ever happening again.

Bit extreme to say that will never happen again. Can imagine in 12 months time Villa, Forest, Leicester and Stoke all top 6 in the champ and West Brom and Derby top 3 in L1...

Who remembers the "Midlands League" (Battle of the Midlands?) they used to do in the fanzine.. my memory of it is that we always did quite well in it. Could be selective remembering though...

Sorry what I meant was, all at the pointy end of the top division - Premier League, as they were all big team in Div 1 back then

Midland teams have always historically underachieved to be honest. Villa have had spells of being good but never consistently even when they won stuff in the early 80s they ended up in the second division by the late 80s. Leicester obviously just had a golden period which was always going to come to an end. Wolves were good in the 50s which is a very long time ago now and they were pretty shit apart from that. Pre war stuff I don't really count. Forest and Derby only won stuff because of Clough and have been relentlessly average before and afterwards.
The problem is, with the exception of the Birmingham teams, we're all medium sized provincial cities who are never likely to challenge much. The only one who could ever break the ceiling now is Villa but they need a big takeover to do it and that seems unlikely.

Talk of Midlands teams reminds me of this classic chant from the early 70s. Who could possibly forget it?
"We occupied the occidental elevation of Coventry's Highfield Road stadium,
Furthermore, we colonised the Popular enclosure at the Baseball Ground, Derby.
Our partisans made incursions into the Borealic Incline at Wolves' Molineux home,
We made a reservation at the terracing that faces the Stretford quarter of Greater Manchester - and remained there until the hour of midnight.
We hold sway over the counties of Middle England - alright, fair enough, agreed".
