The islands have some serious players in this tournament and so I’m looking forward to watching them play. I’ve waited for years to see an apparent narrowing of the gap between SL and NRL and it’s still like watching two different games most of the time.

We have players who go and compete down there but nowhere near skilful enough.

Im surprised the game is at st james Park.
Hardly a hot bed for the game.
Surely old Trafford or the etihad would have made more sense.

Commentators curse!
A minute before they said we’d not made a mistake…
Good finish from the Samoan lad, no catching him.

Samoa unlucky not to score again They finished the half well. There Aussie based players started to get going as it went on. Need a quick start to the half again.

Certainly a comprehensive England win and looked solid pretty much throughout. Samoa though? Really disappointed in them. We played as a team, but Samoa were all over the place and some of the ball handling was almost anateurish at times. I expected more from them but was pleased to see England not let up at all. Would have taken some of the edge off it if we had eased off and conceded a couple of tries late on when the game was already won.

I like rugby league as a game, it's better as a spectacle than Union. Union benefits from the exposure that inevitably comes from the fact that it's a public school game.
What frustrates me and dilutes my interest somewhat is the fact that there are only three international sides that are remotely competitive, and if you wanted to be really harsh, one: Australia. It's a shame because it's good to watch, the players are hard as nails, fit as butchers' dogs and the ball stays in play almost throughout. Those are big plusses in contrast to Union (which I also enjoy, but could be a much better game and spectacle).

Union is way better to watch imo Interesting, I only think that’s the case because Union gets more media push and League is pretty much only based in the north. The fact that league players change codes and generally excel in union and never the other way round makes me think the league guys have more talent. I don’t watch either regularly so it’s a bit of an outsiders view

League over union everytime for me.

Union is way better to watch imo Union has upped its watchability in recent years (largely by taking on a plethora of League coaches and tactics) but to me it’s still a complete borefest with its endless rucks, line outs and kicking. League is direct dynamic and much easier for the casual viewer to comprehend.

The thing that puts me off League other than the occasional international is the 6 tackle rule whereby you have to surrender possession of you haven't scored after 6 'phases'. It's a bit too similar for American Football in that regard.
In Union you can lay seige to the opponent's try line for phase after phase which is more exciting to me.

I enjoyed watching Lebanon they were very impressive against the might of New Zealand.
The quality, crowds and gap between the teams so far has been a bit underwhelming though........

Back in the day it was unlimited sets but the rule was changed for the very reason you identify. They wanted to increase the ebb and flow of the game and prevent a slow grind up to the opposition’s line. For me it was absolutely the right thing to do.

Have to admit the turn out for the game last night was poor - the only excuse I can muster is the Sunday night timing of the fixture and the general disenchantment of the Warrington public with the game at the moment ( which I guiltily raise my hand as being part of) .

That's true, up to the point where a scrum is awarded, has to be re-set several times while every one catches their breath and the whole adrenalin rush dies away. Scrums are the death of Union, but without them, it's basically League.

I’m not anti-Union, but have no interest in it at all. Wouldn’t comment on which code is ‘better’ as I don’t have sufficient knowledge of the nuances of Union to have an informed opinion. I am convinced that the Origin games are always one of the highlights of the year.

Dom Young is smashing it again what a player thank goodness he didn't chose Jamaica. He’s rapid isn’t he. Haven’t watched RL as much over recent years shame as it’s such a great watch. Am I right in thinking it’s between the Aussies and NZ? I went to a GB v Aus at Wembley in the early 90s where Ellery Hanley was playing and we beat them with some Eastwood kicking. It was a great day and brilliant atmosphere. Such a shame there’s no clubs down here.
