A step in the right direction, although I don’t see how a washed up 90’s pop singer is going to help us unearth the next Souttar/Collins.

Interesting that it's another mate of the current manager, just as it was with Cousins www.thewesthamway.com/2022/10/10/manager-set-to-depart/ West Ham are on the hunt for a new Academy manager following a resignation, with many former players being considered for the role. The West Ham Way can exclusively reveal that Academy manager Ricky Martin is believed to have resigned from his role over a week ago, as revealed by ExWHUEmployee. We understand that Martin is set to join Stoke City as Technical Director to the first team, working alongside Alex Neil who he worked with previously at Norwich City, thus now leaving the club in the hunt for his successor. www.westhamzone.com/news/exwhuemployee-mark-noble-to-play-key-role-in-recruitment-of-west-ham-academy-manager/“We believe that academy manager Ricky Martin could be about to leave the club to join Stoke City as technical director to the first team. “Stoke’s manager is Alex Neil and he and Martin worked in very similar roles together at Norwich City. Whilst the move hasn’t officially been confirmed it has been said by a top source that this will ‘probably’ happen. “Mark Noble is meant to be heavily involved in the recruitment of the new man.” “We have already been told that Martin is said to have resigned up to 10 days ago so the search for a replacement can begin.”

Get the bona fide Technical Director model.
Never quite sure about the Technical Director (who is a bessie of the manager) model however.
Does that really work as ideally envisaged?
Not saying this guy is the latter of course - he may well be just a talented ex colleague with something to add.

That's completely the wrong way to recruit a 'Technical Director'...appointed by the manager ffs! Is it beyond the board to research the role that a successful technical director does. Why do we persist with the model that the manager decides everything with little or no recource only answering to the Coates family who we all know let the manager have a free rein. It's no wonder Neil on his appointment stated that it was commonly known in football that the Cotes family were among the best owners you could work for.

Dammit! Now they're going to disappoint all the little old ladies in the retirement homes who think all they have to do is rock up at the Bet to see Ricky Martin!

It's about time Coates had his own ideas and appointed people with their own independent skill sets in the most important jobs within the Club structure. Allowing the incumbent manager of the time to appoint every crucial role is just nuts.. it hasn't worked previously and only seems to lead to an echo chamber situation where the manager only hears one voice and that leaves no real room for any cross-referencing process.

I read Cheadle’s Andrew Frost (former ladies team manager) has been appointed head of academy recruitment, under Cheadle’s Gareth Owen, the academy director.
Where do I sign?

Academy Manager to Technical Director seems like quite a leap.
I'm not too surprised about the nepotism though. I read that our new Assistant Manager Martin Canning was Alex Neil's best mate at school in the fourth form.

I'm actually okay with leaning on past professional relationships which have worked out and for people getting promoted to a higher role. I mean do you really get better candidates if you put the job on LinkedIN ? I'm not sure, you'd get more runners and riders I suppose.
