too cautious. all of the time.
We've arguably got some of the best attacking players in world football. So let's base the team around a terrible crop of centre halves.

What frsutrates me is, for years we've complained that English players don't go abroad enough, then when we have good players playing regularly for big teams in other countries, this idiot picks Maguire who has started twice for United so far this season.

The early, mid 00's teams showed how far away we were with decent squads and poor management. Throw a load, and I mean a load of money, at a top foreign club manager and enjoy the rewards for a few years.
Let the grandkids and their kids look back on street parties and be as pissed off about another 60 years of hurt. It's character building!

This is the bit that I don't get with Southgate. Defensively, it's arguably one of the weaker groups we've had. Attacking wise, it's arguably one of the most talented and excited groups we've ever had. So it doesn't make any sense to go more defensive.

Tactically, he was probably okay. Well obviously he was exceptional in everything before England. It was probably wrong person, wrong time but from listening to a few tidbits of footballers interviews since - they hated him. Barely spoke English, went through a translator etc... for example, Tuchel now, would be streets ahead of Southgate.

Ok I know the players are a level or three up compared to ours, but England today reminded me of MON's Stoke towards the end of his tenure. Same lack of intensity, same nervousness and lack of confidence, same slow build up and fear of going forwards in case they lose the ball so pass it backwards. Same lack of a cutting edge up front despite having good forward players. At one point they even had the same 'free kick on the halfway line that ends up back with the goalie'.

... oh and the same inevitable defensive clusterfuck that led to the goal and losing all three points

I completely forgot about the match but just saw that England haven't scored in open play for 495 minutes. That's a damning statistic given the attacking talent in the squad.
I do feel the Nations League is still glorified friendly matches though, and the major tournaments are where it matters.
And who would've bet on Hungary topping the group with only one game left to play? Incredible scenes if they win it.

I can't see much of a chance of Southgate still being the manager come January. And it's not the pull it was. You can forget Potter. And probably Howe. Pochettino looks a massive long shot. The 2 that I've seen people start to talk about are Cooper and Rodgers (which certainly in Cooper's case shows how low the bar now is) m.skybet.com/football/manager-specials/event/29731199Graham Potter 2/1 Eddie Howe 3/1 Mauricio Pochettino 5/1 Steve Cooper 6/1 Arsene Wenger 12/1 Brendan Rodgers 16/1 Lee Carsley 16/1 Thomas Tuchel 16/1 Steven Gerrard 18/1 Frank Lampard 20/1 Wayne Rooney 20/1 Pep Guardiola 25/1 Scott Parker 25/1 Sean Dyche 25/1 Sarina Wiegman 28/1 Steve Holland 28/1 Chris Wilder 33/1 Dean Smith 33/1 Jose Mourinho 33/1 Marcelo Bielsa 50/1 Emma Hayes 66/1 Paul Warne 66/1 Gary Neville 80/1 Phil Neville 80/1 Alan Shearer 100/1 Jody Morris 100/1 Sam Allardyce 100/1 David Beckham 150/1 Aidy Boothroyd 200/1 Michael Owen 200/1

Italian football isn't exactly known as a bastion for it's acceptance of diversity either.

Brendan Rogers would get a tune out of the array of talent at his disposal Of all the realistic possibilities he is most appealing. The biggest challenge is adapting to the very different demands of club and international managing. He can do that though.

Would anyone actually want him as Stoke manager?
I’d be fuming if he was linked.

It'll be Gerrard wont it? If he doesn't turn things around at Villa he'll more than likely be out of a job by Christmas, can't see as any other Premier League team would then want him but the FA would see "big name ex-England international" as the perfect solution.
