It can be done.
If it gets us another 1000/2000 fans a season it needs doing. For future events to, and wouldn’t cost the world
How we’d get away fans there though I have no idea

If Coventry can knock one up, then we can too and get that London Midland thing to stop on match day/times when the "delivery guys" knock off. It's not that complicated, it really isn't.

It would cost multi-millions in design, planning and consulting fees alone before a workman even turns up on site to start building the bloody thing.

I'm also tired of hearing how proud I must be of Stoke and then in the second breadth I'm told I can't have simple basic transport connections. You can't have both.

That was in 2014 .. and wasn’t the 4.75 ..the amount they got in grant from DoT towards the cost of the scheme not the total cost Admittedly a grander scheme , but the proposed Liverpool Baltic ( reopening an old station ) in 2025 .. is set to cost 80-100 m , it cost millions just in the planning and feasibility stage and that’s on land already owned Similarly Maghull north originally for a new prison , then hospital , then just local housing , commuter traffic took about 8 years of planning process 2010-2018 cost 13m ..but was part of a 300m improvement scheme..both are on Merseyrail a 50/50 locally joint owned scheme , so funding may well be different Thats not to say Stoke’s can’t be done nor that the area isn’t deserving and in need of an improvement to its transport infrastructure .. but rail stations , especially when they’re bolted onto the main line don’t come cheap or quick .. and if funding was available then other locations are likely to come first ( Etruria ? )

I’m saying people massively underestimate the logistics and cost of ‘just building a small station’ that would most likely never make a profit. People are also calling for the Coates’ to fund it ‘cus they can afford it’. Why should they? The idea is a non starter for multiple reasons. Now if people were talking about, say, a tram network that would serve the whole city, then I’d be onboard. But an expensive station to serve a football stadium? At a time when people are struggling to eat, and heat their homes? Nah.

It wouldn't just serve the football though, as I said it would serve the multiple distribution depo employees and some of the housing on Trentham Lakes. There's probably more groups needing it too - such as conferences at the Stadium itself. The city needs investment and a few stations is just part of it.

That’s says a grant of up to 4.75 mil towards the cost of the station , it would cost more than that

I think that you will find that was not the case I think you'll find that it wasn't me that asserted it was. I stand corrected. It was Earnest Marples, the Minister for Transport, who sold the stake in a road building company, to his wife.

The Coventry city stadium was built just a few hundred yards away from the existing railway line - I’m not sure how much consideration re location to transport was taken It’s a “loop line” just serving local stations between Coventry and Nuneaton so adding a station en route was relatively simple The stadium hosts a range of events in addition to football including concerts etc- there’s a large inside arena , function rooms, a casino, as well as an adjacent shopping centre

Imagine any govt spending that money on us We've been talking about this for 40 years Coventry is a very progressive city with regard to its approach to transport. VLR in development, loads of EV charging points, fully electric buses etc etc. Like you say, I assume it's helped by appropriate levels of government funding, presumably because, as a location, it's integral to various engineering and manufacturing centres locally, whereas Stoke...well, managed decline seems to be the way. It's a shame. Also strong links to JLR too

The club could build whatever they wanted but unless rail companies opt to adjust entire timetables (which if you've used trains in the past 20 years you'll know they're totally reticent to do).
The very best the club could do is lobby for some kind of construction but there's absolutely zero guarantee any of the rail companies would budge. On an aside, I come in from Nottingham on the train unless I can get a lift over. Since it's been a direct line rather than a change at Derby they've cut the service after 5:30 meaning any kind of delay and you're stuck until the 7:30 service. I've pivoted to making a brisk walk to Longton station post-match to ensure I make it. EMR make absolutely no provisions when Uttoxeter races are on to put more carriages on because there's absolutely no incentive for them to do so, same will apply to whichever company would be providing the service next to the ground.
The train system in this country is so London-centric (maybe not totally unfairly) that it's easier for me to watch Stoke away in London than it is to go to Stoke for a home game in the evening as the final train is 9:45pm whereas I could be back in Notts for just before midnight.

Your last comment reminds me of when I worked for Corus who had works in Teesside, Scunthorpe, Sheffield/Rotherham, South Wales, and IJmuiden in the Netherlands. We held our meetings in IJmuiden as it was easy for everyone to fly to Schipol early morning, hold a meeting in IJmuiden and fly home in the evening. It meant an overnight stop for most people to hold a meeting anywhere in the UK apart from London. Flying to Schipol was the cheapest option. I would get a train to the ground I would use it even with changes at stations. I've done it before but then have a bus journey from centre of Stoke. The return journey seems like for ever. The negativity on this MB is symptomatic of why there is so little development in Stoke on Trent. The main investment required by me is access direct from the D Road to parking next to the ground. Provide decent access and egress and more people will attend matches. Spending money on the ground might retain more supporters but will not attract more. The ground needs suitable and sufficient routes N, S, E, and W with sufficient parking within a decent walking distance. Then a lot more people would consider attending matches. It was so much better at the old Vic.

Ridiculous state of affairs. At least you don't have to change at Derby anymore, I spent years travelling to Warrington using the Derby/Crewe line until i was made redundant during the first lockdown. Was quite surprised to see they've now extended that line to go all the way to Castle Newark, much better service in that respect but I was shocked to see they'd taken off certain services so that the wait is now two hours and not one. Services I'd always thought were busy one's too. I used to catch the 7.28 from Longton, they've now removed that service completely, so the first train from Longton to Crewe is now 8.28 which means I wouldn't have been able to get to Warrington in time to start work at 9, disgusting. That train was always packed too, so how the fuck can they have taken it off.

Yeah it seems they've balanced out the good thing they did in extending the line (although it tends to empty completely at Nottingham, good if you live in Carlton, Netherfield and the like I guess) with simply not keeping up with the same level of service. And yeah you're right, on a Saturday they've cut the one service at 6:15 you'd be guaranteed to get a lot of people on every other week, whole thing is just backwards. This is notwithstanding the fact the trains on Sunday aren't direct until after 1500, prior to that you would need to go via Nuneaton, Tamworth or Stafford which is a 3 hour journey with at least 2 stops but you're not getting into Stoke until after 12.

Don't forget the newts! Add another £1 million, or the archaeologists - another £1 million. Pisses me off that. Would anyone miss a few newts, there's always plenty more? I was on a construction site where the job was delayed for 6 months and cost an extra 0.5million for newt relocation. They found none, not one, zero newts. The archaeology cost another 0.5million and another 6 months delay and they found precisely zilch, not a broken mug, nor a teapot spout. Utter waste of tax payers hard earned.

We lack adventure in this city to build anything like this.

Does the green park area have a hotel? Factories and a massive Sainsbury's distribution centre? Pound for pound I'd say they are the same. Also doesn't good transport increase development? Just asking.... It's also about time we did get some imagination of this sort....
