AN “ slow and ponderous” Clucas hurt his hamstring due to 3 games in a week

I already feel a bit sorry for him. Is there a "right way" to set up this squad of players? Maybe its a Jigsaw puzzle that can only be solved by another 2 or 3 transfer windows (Where have we heard that before) Having said that. Don't play Clucas. Don't play Strikers in Defensive positions. Do drop perpetual under achievers, even if it means replacing them with youth. 4/10

5 from me really bad but have people thought he may just be trying different things out. Formations players here and there maybe he’s searching for the right team
Give him a break ffs

5 - early days and got it wrong today, though I could see what he was trying, OK first half, diabolical the second. Need a goalie, Souter and Tymon can't come back quick enough. At least he knows more about the players strengths and weaknesses are and he's got a hell of a job on his hands.

Bit of sympathy if a new manager comes in and throws some shit against the wall and sees if it sticks
More so when shit is pretty much all he's got to throw.
But it did look a very strange line-up on paper, and so it proved on grass.
Can't go above 4 even with all the mitigation (and there is lots after only a few days training, another completely botched summer of recruitment and a handful of key injuries)

4 from me and I've marked him slightly higher than I would MON because he's only just walked through the door. But his team selection and tactics were appalling. Hopefully he'll also learn from what Bonham and Wilmot did that the same stupid mistakes they did is partly to blame for why MON was sacked. Let's hope he can concoct a silk purse from a pig's ear until our better injured players come back.
OS.

Very difficult coming in and not knowing how good or otherwise the players are and who is capable of what but hopefully he has learned a lot today and can begin to turn it round. It makes you think that he should just work on getting the players super fit and then give them a ball.

3. He somehow took the formation that MON persisted with and made it worse. The flat 3 in midfield continually left a huge gap for Reading to exploit when they won the ball back. Only thing he gets credit for is actually using subs to try and change things, but even those were a bit all over the place.

4 points from 6 with 4 at the back.
Changed it back to 5 at the back. This meant that that ball over the top would destroy us again.
Weird subs
Started and kept on Clucas for too long
1 from me.
MON would have been crucified for every part of that today.

Has to be given a bit of time - needed to bring a goalkeeper in as a priority in the window, failing to do so is going to cost him. Inherited an unbalanced and unfit mediocre squad of players, bit of quality sprinkled here and there. Since the last years of Hughes I have been saying we need some quality and depth in defensive areas and it has now been the same for years. See if he can guide us to the next window with some stability - will be able to see if he has a clue by the type of players he brings in - but has to concentrate on defence and building a solid foundation from there. 5 - Another long season ahead

Hopefully the training ground can help, it bloody needs to, and I'll cut AN a little slack about selection since he doesn't know the squad well enough but his tactical misread of the game and poor homework on Reading, that part is potentially scary

Reading his post match comments there is a massive issue with player fitness and that is down to the players and previous manager. It is something that has dogged us since relegation.

There was absolutely no need to change the formation especially when we have NO wingbacks available or a LCB
Playing Fox at LCB has never worked before, he's a steady LB but shouldn't ever be played at LCB.
Playing Baker deep was a big mistake, in the absence of a DM it should have been Thompson.
Campbell is gash centrally and all his decent games have been played wide.
It was all too Nathan Jones for me.

0 Can’t give him anything today bizzare line up, and the subs were even worse. We can’t play 5 at the back with these slow out of shape plodders. For me 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 is all we can play until January A 4 from me, maybe 5 if I’m being generous based on our superior possession and getting shots in. Why did AN play wing backs when we don’t have anyone close to having any aptitude for that role in the players we had available?! I know Alex is new, but has he been talking to his bloody coaches in the past week?? A back four with Wilmot at RB and Fox at LB wouldn’t have been great, but it would look far more cohesive than the shambles we witnessed yesterday! Was he that desperate not to play Taylor in a back four?? Delap, Campbell and Brown in a front three would have been far more effective. Come on Alex, you’ve had a week to do enough 24/7 research into our squad to know Brown has never played wing back in his life! A really poor and disappointing start from Alex. Hope he learns from his mistake and never puts out that team ever again!

Strange that his analysis of the game is that the main failing, player fitness, is something that he couldn’t possibly be blamed for?

Strange that his analysis of the game is that the main failing, player fitness, is something that he couldn’t possibly be blamed for? Why is it strange? He could possibly be blamed for the set up but, as he said, his choice was limited due to injuries to several key players. He cannot be responsible for out of condition and unfit players.

First half, bar the farcical goal, Stoke dominated the game, albeit without posing too many problems for Reading. So, maybe his selection wasn't as bad as is being claimed, but was undone by one moment of madness that no one could legislate for. I have been bemoaning, for many years, our players inability to beat the first man with a cross, something AN mentioned post match. Equally, Fosu's cross to their keeper left us terribly exposed, although even then, the danger was minimal until Bonham and Flint proved otherwise AN's biggest mistake, for me, was not playing Brown up top with Delap
