Given the current issues with fuels, i wonder if theres a tinge of regret for knocking most of them down now. Only thought about it recently cos the one at the top of anchor road got taken down a few years ago.

I went years thinking it was a mental asylum because that’s what my nan said so I didn’t go near it🤣

A necessary evil and so squat and ugly. However many people surprisingly have a sentimental attachment to them and some very strong memories. There used to be a Gasometer in Stone near the Joules Brewery, and if in town we always made a point of looking at it to see how full or empty it might be!
Before anyone says that's sad, we had to make our own fun in the old days!

We have massive gas underground storage now, between Middlewich and Northwich is about the biggest in Europe, Stublach connected about 10 old salt mines, it gets topped up over the summer.

Coal drops yard behind Kings Cross Station had a few, they have left the outer rings and vertical steels up and recently built circular flats on the inside

Casting the net a little wider Vienna were left with 4 disused gasometers with the advent of natural gas - which were all brick built structures from the late 19th century. They have been converted into a mixture of shopping mall, residences, office space and concert venue - where no lesser lights than Kylie, Llana Del Rey and Sting have graced the stage. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Gasometers

Before anyone says that's sad, we had to make our own fun in the old days! Not really. The old gasometers by The Oval cricket ground used to be a source of hours of conversation on Test Match Special, especially when it was raining. Even the TV coverage would always include a few shots and comments about how full or otherwise the gasometers were.

North Sea Oil and gas was going to be the saviour of the UK, and we were promised plentiful cheap fuel to supply the nation for generations to come.
Now we are being charged a fortune for what was ours! Where did it all go wrong ?
The fat cats will be smiling if not laughing as we struggle through the coming winter months wearing extra pullovers and the lights off. 🤔⚓️
