You may have seen that yesterday the Home Secretary issued a press release threatening life bans and banning orders for various things a small minority of football fans do, many of which are already illegal. I'm mystified as to why she did suddenly this at this time, but if you are interested you can listen to my response of behalf of the FSA on Radio 5 yesterday morning at approximately 2 hrs 42 mis on the link below www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001bb7z

I heard you live yesterday morning, speaking very well as ever. It's mystifying indeed. I wonder if targeting football is meant to be another dig at 'working class' people.

That's very kind of you to say so. At FSA towers we can't quite work it out, because it came out of the blue. You may be right. As Dresden says, the political pundits seem to think she won't be Home Secretary under the new PM, whoever wins, which I suppose makes it more mystifying but less worrying !

Priti Patel is worthy of my favourite but only occasionally used epithet - she really isn't that bright. But when combined with a level of cynicism that she possesses and in one of the most powerful positions in this country, that makes her very dangerous indeed.

Purely attention seeking. Football Supporters must be seen as easy targets for a bit of old-fashioned disciplinary action.

This current generation of Conservative ministers are really very below par. The current leadership competition is bringing out the worse in them and they are so transparent it’s embarrassing as you watch them manoeuvring for positions in the next cabinet. To attack our support of football as a political manoeuvre is at the least farcical and totally unnecessary. Existing laws and regulations that all supporters support are more than adequate to deal with any small minorities that occasionally step out out of line.

She's doing what she always does, and all that she is actually capable of doing, seemingly: sounding tough to appeal to those who respond well to dog whistle politics. On the positive side, it rarely amounts to much and she soon forgets to put anything into practice, if she ever had any intention of doing so. With any luck, this is more of the same attention-seeking bluster.

Malcom sure does love banning our loyal fans You will have to explain that comment. If it is a reference to your support for pyros at matches, and our/my attempts to persuade you that their use poses both health and comfort risks to fellow fans and risks to yourself because you might get a criminal conviction and a banning order (even more severe if Priti Patel gets her way), it is of course the polar opposite of the truth.

Hi Malcolm, I'm out of the country right now and because of that I can't play the app. Briefly what does it say please She suddenly announced that football fans who use drugs at games, are violent, use pyros, engage in on-line abuse of players or invade the pitch will face lifetime bans from games and be stopped from watching England abroad. Football banning orders have been on the statute book for years. If you have an FBO you already have to hand in your passport when England are playing abroad (even though the large majority of such wouldn't have the slightest intention of travelling to watch England). It's as though she thought she was announcing something new FBOs are for a maximum of 10 years, not life, but clubs can impose lifetime bans. Coke use in a football ground of itself currently doesn't trigger an FBO, but is a criminal offence, and if someone using coke is violent they can get one. Pitch incursion and pyro use are also offences already. I pointed out that the arrest rate at football grounds is about half what it was 10 years ago, and the overall trend is downwards. Even though post pandemic there has been a small increase in the number of recorded incidents of disorder at football grounds, they are about one every other game, and the arrest rate is about the same, and is approx one arrest for every 28k spectators. At Glastonbury for example in 2019 there were 96 arrests i.e approx one arrest for every 2k, about 14 times worse than football. Are we to have music festival banning orders for those who use drugs or get a conviction at Glastonbury or other festivals - banned for life from all music festivals and surrender your passport whenever there is a festival abroad ? Of course we aren't. And what about disorder at other sporting events - horse racing and boxing for example. And what is the incident/arrest rate and drug use in town and City centres late on a Friday or Saturday evening, or at, say the Notting Hill carnival ? The most effective solutions to many of these difficulties, particularly with younger fans, is education and self-policing, not more punitive legislation. The law is already very strong in this area. We (FSA) are working with the PL and EFL and many individual clubs on this, and there are some very good schemes run by Club Community units working with their own young fans. Complacency about problems at football is not appropriate but neither is panic or exaggeration, and neither is discrimination against football fans compared with other groups in society. Here endeth the rant !

I think it’s one of those instances where a missed comma or word completely changes the meaning. Possibly "Malcom, she sure does love banning our loyal supporters". Don’t forget commas can save lives……"Let’s all eat, granny" instead if "Let’s all eat granny" would definitely spare granny a gruesome end at the hands of her grandkids,

Had it been another poster I would have made that assumption myself. But banksy has previously said the same thing on a thread about pyros where he misrepresented (or misunderstood if I'm being generous) those of us who warned that pyro use could result in a ban as us wanting to get our own fans banned, when the intention was precisely the reverse.
