Shameless clickbait title but I found this rather amusing.. in Wilder’s presser the journo (much to my surprise and confusion) asks a long-winded question full of praise and admiration for the bear-pit atmosphere at Stoke, harking back to the Prem days and everything.. when she finally gets to the end and said “it’s a real cauldron to play in don’t you think?”, Wilder - who’s clearly been paying attention over the last ten years or so - just looks up and says flatly “no”. 😅🤣
Made me chuckle anyway

I imagine the journalist also uses “be careful what you wish for, look at stoke/charlton” a few times a year too. Whenever I hear that one it actually infuriates me. It would only be applicable if we’d gone down in Hughes’ first (or 2nd) season; but in reality there was 5 full seasons from Pulis leaving to relegation, including 3x in a row that far exceeded Pulis’ best league finishes in both style & substance. Our peak atmosphere in that first season (prob the Man City 1-0 win in 08/09) is surely one of the highest peak atmospheres in the entire country, but it was truly a perfect storm. We had plenty of premiership games where the atmosphere was totally flat. It’s just a tired, lazy cliche’ these days, although the old bearpit still makes the rarest of reappearances. But 4 seasons and counting of being poor in a league where our expectations are high, whilst watching all the people in power repeat the same mistakes, is hardly fertile ground for sowing a fervent atmosphere. The one thing I am pleased about is that our crowds have maintained at a level that far exceeds our level of support in the early 00s. There’s a downward trend but, if you had told me 4 years ago how these 4 seasons would pan out, I would’ve feared a return to gates of 12-14k. Even if our malaise continues it’s obvious the matchgoing support grew a lot as a result of that decade of relative success. I see a lot of people talk about falling out of love with stoke/football and it fills me with doom, and I fear the direction football is heading given so many stories of kids with no interest; but then I look at our crowds / crowds across the EFL and suspect matchgoing support has never been stronger throughout the leagues in living memory? That’s the impression I get anyway so it’s cause for optimism. I suspect a lot of the indifference people are feeling towards stoke on this board is wholly related to the pitiful last 5 seasons and that, should we finally get our act together again and find ourselves on a clear upward trajectory, a lot of those posters will have their passion reignited. I seriously doubt there’s any Brentford fans right now expressing similar sentiments.

Wishful thinking but a 5 or 6 year delay might make a return to the Prem taste even sweeter than it might have done with a swift bounce back... at least atmosphere-wise.

I used to love it when we chanted “We are Stoke and we play how we want”
Certainly got under Wingers skin.

Yep be awesome to say let's prove him wrong tonight but sadly the Bet 365 isn't what it was & would take a monumental swing and run of results/fortune to get anything like the halcyon days back anytime soon. He's 100% correct in his answer.

Wilder was at Stoke a few times when he was out of work he knows it well and his comments are actually very flattering , let’s be honest we are a pushover for any hard working or half decent team

I don't imagine there will be a lot of non-season ticket holders in tonight at £30 a head for a Wednesday night against Middlesbrough.

It’ll be a cauldron the second they have a shot on target, it’s just a shame that it will be against Stoke and not for it.
The atmosphere at games has sucked for years.

Ah the owd ‘bear pit’. If we’re honest, amongst all the apathy, the Brit hosts one of the league’s worst atmospheres.

Are there any notable atmospheres anymore? I go about 7 or 8 away games a season and not seen anything special outside of goals or really bad refereeing decisions for years. Most Prem games sound abysmal atmosphere wise on the tele. I think proper spitting cauldrons for large part of the 90 minutes are very much a thing of the past. Forest sounded OK on Sunday I suppose.

The most energy in our stadium is negative shite that gets flung towards our own. I remember when we made opposition keepers cry, now we blow them kisses. Sad really.

We're a cauldron of shit, bad luck and mediocrity at the moment. If the players could keep fit and the manager show any semblance of want or effort the fans would back em to the tilt. Problem is an ever changing lineup of the same shit formation leading to wank football isn't going to get anyone out of their seats. This club used to cheer for hoofball mind you, so that tells ya where we're at.
