He's one of those managers who believe in flexibility in players as a great virtue. When he sees it doesn't work the solution is to try once more believing in flexibility in management. Or he's out of his depth, not knowing what he's doing. Still you have to say giving Tymon some confidence as lwb was a masterstroke. flexibility in players is a great virtue & Thompson is flexible he isn't a wing back though I think O'Neill is,like 99% of football managers stubborn/arrogant so will probably try him there again Now that we're out in the Caraboa, there's no real reason to, unless Tymon gets a serious injury. Josh should play all important matches, and all our matches from now on are going to be important, until we're sure we can neither get relegated nor promoted, which usually doesn't happen until April or later. But it's the success of Tymon that's killing the rest of the team in a way. He's so good at lwb that we are forced to play with a rwb as well, but we don't have any. Because we play with two wbs, we are forced to play with three at the back, with the rcb under a lot of strain because of the no good rwb. Because we play with three at the back there's no reason to play with a dm at least not in O'Neill's mind. Because we don't play with a dm, we are easy to pick open for other teams and when they do we are very vulnerable. Because we play five at the back we're usually a man short in midfield. because we're usually a man short in midfield, one of the strikers or both are forced to drop deep just to come within sight of the ball. Because our strikers are forced to go, they often don't have the necessary amount of energy preserved to score goals, and when Tymon sends in his near perfect crosses, there's mo one to meet them, because they're still in midfield.. Yes, he's got a lot to answer for that man Tymon, but he's been my favourite Stoke player for a number of years.

The wingback system only works if Tymon has a good game. While he’s becoming or possibly already is one of the best in the league, we’re over reliant on him. If he’s not available or being rested we really ought to go the 4 at the back. Surprised MoN won’t do this more often, WB is a pretty specialist position Agree with this to be honest. When we were 5th in the league it was whilst using the 532 system so I can't write the system off. But as stated it is heavily reliant on Tymon and how he performs. Also seems to work better when Powell is in the team. 2 out of the 3 teams we have played so far set up with a 532, so most clubs want to keep their good wing backs.

If he names a team with Thompson as a wing back he should be sacked before kick off.
If he hasn't got any fit wing backs, don't play the wing back system.
For fucks sake

Did he actually say that? Add another string to his bow? Ridiculous. Clutching at straws to try and justify another CM playing at wingback.

MON has recognized the top 6 teams in the league last season played with a back 3 and 2 wingbacks. So he feels he has to do the same if we have any chance of promotion. He may well be right. However, all the other managers know it too and there aren’t enough decent wingbacks to go around. Tymon is arguably the best left sided wingback in the league, Clarke may prove to a decent wingback on the right. But that’s all we have and all we are likely get. So as stated by others, if one or both are injured he should change the formation to suit the available players.

To be honest i don’t really rate him in his preferred position never mind left bloody wing back! He showed occasionally brilliantly through balls and crosses with his left peg iirc. I thought he was en route to being a good deep lying playmaker. But he was inconsistent in the games he last season and never got the chance to stick at it and develop. Pity.

Criticising line ups before a ball was kicked backfired for a few on Saturday, again , now it's criticising a line up that hasn't been announced.

Personally, I think that they should move Thompson on, if his role is to become a poor man’s Danny Pugh. He should be challenging for central midfield. If he can’t, he should be gone. If a left wing back is injured, let’s not play a system that doesn’t have the players for it then. The league cup was a far better time to risk a change in formation than to risk throwing in a player who isn’t suited in the role anyways. How unsuited is Thompson? I’ve not really seen him play anything other than CM but I thought he came here as a LW.

When everyone's fit, isn't McCarron our second choice LWB? In which case MON'recruitment is about right, isn't? We haven't yet seen him, but, who knows, if he's good enough, we might even be able to play both him and Tymon in a 4231 should Michael go that way.
(RWB is is different kettle of fish, l'll grant you).

If he’s going 352 today and might have to use some players in positions they haven’t played recently he needed to have a look at them in it. Both Clucas and Thompson have played wide left at times here or at other clubs. I can’t see Tymon being doubtful as a compelling reason he would change the system he wants to play.

Did anyone think it would work? Fucking hell Considering he's probably third choice in the position, he wasn't that bad. Was instrumental in the first goal, put the cross in for the disallowed goal and defensively I don't think he did too badly. You could tell they were sent out to target our wing backs too probably knowing our injury issues. So all things considered against a strong Boro side, I think he did alright. First half I don't think he pushed forward anywhere near enough but second half he was pushing forward a bit more but still not Tymonesque. 6/10 for me.

Completely hung out to dry, put a shift on and moved the ball on quickly but knew he was never going to take a man on.

I admire the diligence you've shown defending the manager. I like him as a person. It's not personal. But you can't play a wing back system with two wing backs who have played a combined amount of games in single figures in that position. You can't play that back 3 as a back 3. You can't play that midfield 3 as a midfield 3. It was a complete shambles and you know it And it doesn't matter what the stats say, or what his net spend is, results and performances have not been good enough for a long long time. He just doesn't know what he's doing.

And what I've written is my assessment of a player playing out of position and how I rated their performance taking that into account. I've not said anywhere it was the right formation or player to play. I actually just posted in another thread saying "when I seen the lineup it gave me a shiver and I knew we were in for a long night"
