A while ago there was a guy who used to post statistics over a timeline during Michael Oneils tenure. I believe they may have showed xG v xGA amongst other statistics. And maybe compared those results to the actual score lines to, to show if we were over or under performing etc.
Any chance someone could produce something like this again. I seen a post yesterday which showed we've had alot of games in the last 12 months with low xG.
So would be nice to see a visual representation of how we look compared to 1, 2 and 3 years ago.

The Fotmob app is great for this stuff, if you go on league and team stats you can cycle back through the last few years too

Thanks mate I can find singular stats for certain games online but struggling to find anything that shows it in a timeline. And a bit too lazy to attempt to gather the data and produce something myself lol

10 game rolling xG for each season and then as a 10 game rolling xG from the Barnsley 4-2 game until yesterday. There's a playoff winning run in there, it's just not fallen over a 46 game season yet. Attachment DeletedBlue bits are where we're creating more xG than we're allowing. Orange bits are where we're being out "scored" on xG.

The real question is of course - is tachyon a Stokie? Or does he/she spread his/her charms more widely? Whatever the answer, he/she should clearly be part of our crack recruitment team. By which I obviously mean, not that our recruitment team is first class. But it's on crack.

Wonder what we were doing differently in those games and if the availability of key players has had a big impact. I think a key thing to remember when analysing it is that it shows a 10 game rolling average at each point. So that season long period where its blue, it doesn't mean we should have won every game, just that our form showed we were consistently expected to outscore our opponents and comfortable win more than we lose. Since that golden spell you can see that we're expected to concede more and expected to score less. The blue spell ends when Souttar got injured I'd guess but I'd say that's just one of many things Contributing. For example Souttar shouldn't have much impact on our expected goals. Lastly I think it's also important to remember that this is expected rather than actual goals. If you were to compare actual to expected you could probably derive periods where we are playing better than expected and worse than expected. Lucky v unlucky. Or clinical v careless. Anyway Im just a bit of a stats nerd so this stuff interests me. I'd like to look into shots for v shots against too for example to see if we're still cresting and conceding as many chances as before but either not taking them or not producing quality chances. Anyway I'm rambling now.

tachyon how do I find this stuff on infogel? Do they produce the graphs and all for you? Hi mate, I model the data for Infogol, so I pull the Stoke stuff from our internal database. Infogol is used to power the Sporting Life/Skybet/Betfair football coverage, so our content guys tend to use the plots as and when. We don't produce a dedicated Championship preview, but we have one for the Premier League and that has all the rolling xG plots for all 20 teams. SL PL GuideI can post up our in house plots and graphics, but unfortunately I can't post csv files of the data. We've got game by game xG data for a variety of leagues on the app & the website, but along with everyone else we don't post easily accessible rolling data. Here's the detailed xG for/against for the last ten games, with a mini viz covering the last 47 matches along the bottom.

Love you input on here. Remind me again please how or why the xG is calculated and how it is now considered a useful pre-game indicator of the likelihood of a final score? It’s process verses outcome. XG measures the process, how likely an event is to happen in the long term based on historical data of what happened in the past over a large sample of similar scenarios. The outcome is how often it did happen in the short term. Outcome doesn’t always tally perfectly with process. It’s like tossing a coin 10 times and not always getting five heads and five tails. You can have a run of negative or positive variance that makes your scoring/conceding look better/worse than your underlying process, but going forward, your outcome will tend towards your process. Rolling xG is a measure of a side’s underlying wellbeing that is more predictive of future actual performance than using past actual performance. Long term, you get, more or less, what you deserve. Short term you can end up 3rd with a so so process, like Huddersfield last season.

I note the website provides xG stats, but wasn’t sure if there was a wider database available to subscribers.

How can anyone say? There’s definitely some decent stuff there where we’re a decent chunk better than our opponents. Unfortunately the direction of travel and the managers fascination seems to be either us being marginally better than the opposition or them being marginally better than us basically strangling the games.

tachyon do you have any access to distance covered stats for the championship? Be interested to know how we compare for sprints and distance covered to other teams in the championship.
