Booked a family trip to Lisbon next weekend, which includes a Benfica home game next Friday night which I can't bloody wait for. Shame it was the day before I found out I was losing my job, but there you go....
Anyway, I'm after any tips, recommendations etc for both the city and the match. I've got tickets for £25 each which is pretty bloody good for a club of their size, but I trust Stokies far more than I do the guide books. Places to go, beaches, food, drink etc.
Cheers.

Get yourself a viva card and load it up with a few trips. It can be used on trains, trams, buses etc and is a dirt cheap way of getting around the city. The green line for Cais do Sodre to Cascais stops at a number of good beaches. For food and drink head to Barrio Alto or Pink Street. Time Out Market is also good.

Lisbon is a fantastic city with the airport virtually in the city itself
Sporting stadium is literally next door to the airport and Benfica two miles further round the ring road on your left
We stopped over there en route to Brazil for the World Cup in 2014
Enjoy

If you're wife is going she may like this place, it's a short train ride away, normally only 1 an hour so book in advance or get there early as normally queues as the ticket machines aren't always working portugaltravelguide.com/sintra-palace/Also a train to Estoril and Cascais for the seaside beaches and restaurants

Over 20 years since I was there but I do remember a visit to the Ocean Aquarium (I think that’s what is was called) which was pretty jaw dropping in its scale and content. At one point me and the Mrs were being followed around by a penguin which seemed to have the run of the place ( it had an evil look in its eye - I can see where the guys who made Madagascar got their ideas from) .

Agree with most of what's been said, very laid back for a capital city. Where you go depends on what you're interested in. Lot of very good outdoor places to eat at night overlooking the city. There is a very good fan zone outside the ground. Get to the game early enough to see the eagle released. It's not some pathetic thing like the Chrystal Palace one that just flies to a handler, it soars around the stadium. The only disappointmentwas the standard of football, don't think I 've seen a more one sided game. Public transport to the game was also very good.

Been there 3 times. Cascais, Texas Bar, Irish Bar, Bit of culture, Lovely Ladies. What's not to like? Don't you (or the misses) argue with the Local Gendarmerie. You will get a big stick in the back of the head from what I remember

I’d you go in the club shop before the game the eagle is in there . It’s massive . They charge u for a photo . Get your phone out quick and get one yourself

Lisbon is one of my favourite cities. You can go to Belem on the tram and try the famous pasteis de Belem at the shop where they were originally made. The Alfama district has a number of fado houses if you are into that sort of thing. You can hardly go wrong when it comes to food. The Elevator between the lower and upperparts of the city was built by Eifel, Just wander round and soak up the atmosphere. Agree with what has been said about Cascais (beach and sea food); also Sintra with the crazy Pena Palace. Good views from the Castle. You will love the place-and the football!

Fantastic city but there’s a clear divide between poverty and high rollers. Stay inland for cheap ale and down to the beach area for expensive fun😉 Good luck with the job hunt mate👍🏻

No, the colloquial term was / is Gendarmerie. military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Republican_National_Guard_(Portugal)I never said it was me who got a stick round the Head whilst on my Visits with the Royal Navy. But thanks for your concern 👍

Get the train to Cascais, it takes about an hour from memory. Beautiful old town, beach, marina, good bars and restaurants.

Sorry to hear about the job, Bunny. Hope you find a similar or better one soon. I know nothing about Lisbon, I'm afraid - Portugal is one of the few European countries I have never visited.
Good Luck!

Get on top of the mini Eiffel Tower and shout ‘hand fackin ball’ at the top of your voice.

I'm thinking about a Lisbon trip this year too. But maybe I'll go to Marrakesh instead.
Sintra's palace and Cascais are only about 10 miles apart if that makes planning easier, and there's lots of cool stuff in that area.
