I was there.Didn't Martin Carruthers play for Villa that night?Think he scored too, looked really impressive. When we signed him i got really excited, told all my mates he was shit-hot...then i saw him pre-season against Newcastle Town and he was fucking awful, just kept falling over. And he kept that up for his entire Stoke career.

Martin Carruthers did indeed play, and looked the business! Was there with Bogus and we both thought he was a star in the making. Shame he never lived up to that potential!!

Nello was through on goal (there defence let him) Spink had been pratting around pretending he as scared, he was just about to pull the trigger and Tony Kelly? barged him off the ball and banged it over! I was only a nipper (9) but I remember it like it was yesterday! haha

I went that match too. More Stoke fans there than Villa. The Nello thing was a classic. Anybody remember Nello wearing a kilt in the 92/93 video? Lou and Ivan cracking up.

1993.
We packed the away end - at least 2.5k and probably more than they had there!
Shameful turnout for a Villa legend and European Cup Winner - he acknowledged our support more than his own that night.
Didn't we have Nello on for a tap-in off a corner and Kelly ballsed it up, up our end?

I was there, I remember saying we'd unearthed a gem in Carruthers too. "He's an FA Youth Cup winner you know". Great approach play, then fell over every time. Bugger. We had a top time in that away end though. The Nello thing was the only time I can remember a football ground in stitches with both fans egging the same player on. Unless you count Bolton away a few weeks previously of course

I have never laughed so much at a football match than when Nello came on... I had tears streaming down my face, pure comedy ;D

I was there and remember just how good David Platt was back then - even in a friendly his movement off the ball was stunning -now he's a balloon headed bore but what a player!
Remember Nello coming on - the Villa players stood back to let him score an open goal and some stupid Stoke player got in his way, took the ball off his foot and missed - was that Carruthers??

I also went from memory the reason for so many Stokies being there was the expectation that he would be signing for Stoke on leaving Villa only for him to go elsewhere
