The same every season, im sure teams that do well, dont have the amount of injuries we do. We have a smaller squad too at the moment.
Started already with Powell

We have to replace Powell from a team perspective. Consider him as a bit part player who we might get 12-18 games from. We need a player capable of more games. A great player but not one to rely on for the cohesion of the team.

Where do you get your figures from?

I noticed Holden is still describing Souttar as being in 'rehab' so we may not see arguably our best 2 players on a regular basis until well after the season is in full swing.
Still plenty of time in pre-season to pick a few additional injuries as well.
We seem to have a squad composed of the worlds most fragile men!

At the moment, how I will view Powell will depend on the length of the current injury. If he’s out for a couple of months, it’s really not a stick to beat him with. If he’s out for much of the season, then he’s had two long term injuries for two seasons in a row and that’s much more of a problem.

There is no way that Powell (or most footballers) look after themselves as well as Ronaldo though. Love or hate him he is a supreme athlete. Man Utd players have all commented on the ridiculous levels he takes his health and fitness to. While Powell (allegedly) has always spent alot of his free time on his Playstation! I'm not knocking Powell but comparisons with Ronaldo have to be put into some kind of context. While there is no reason why other players can do this, probably there are not too many who go to his lengths.

He was unlucky to break his leg but that's on top of a string of other injuries that's kept him out of contention. You can't claim a player isn't injury prone by conveniently discounting some of their injuries. Put it this way - if you heard we were after a really good player who last season had two quad injuries, a broken leg and has potentially picked up a serious knee injury 20 minutes into the first friendly in preseason would you be excited or think we'd lost the plot? There are different reasons for a player being injury prone. Smith was injury prone because he played like a maniac in a time when the game was more brutal. Some players have an underlying chronic condition. Other aren't really built for the rigours of professional football. Most players get more injury prone as they age. Others are like some highly tuned athletes where they are forever suffering from niggles. Others are just unlucky. I think with Powell it's the last two that are the issue. It might not be his fault but he's one of those players you can't rely on being fit most of the time and the idea of building a team round him or even seeing him as a first team regular involves rewriting history in order to justify wishful thinking. If he does play the majority of games this season that's great but given his track record to plan on that basis is a bit mad.

What one or two elite level performers do is neither here nor there.

Of course all you say about Ronald’s being the supreme athlete is undoubtedly true and making any direct comparison with Renaldo isn’t strictly relative. However it does remain that to slur Nick Powell just because he’s 28 years of age doesn’t mean at that age he’s in any way over the hill.

Ronaldo may well “take his fitness to extreme levels” but this is the degree of focus we mere mortals expect from players being paid what we earn in a year every week. It seems proportionate to me. So are most players lazy? Is Stoke’s fitness regime problematic? Or both? Or something else? This run of injuries must stop.

He looks like a geriatric when you watch that footage now. I thought he was amazingly fit at the time. That is how much fitness has moved on. In 20 years time the same will apply I reckon there is a lot more that footballers can still do to keep up their fitness. so yes, most players are probably lazy by the standards that we will be seeing in a few years but its hard to regulate what players do and don't do off the pitch.

I think that, like every job, there are those that earn a hell of a lot within their profession (like Ronaldo) who do more than most, and there are the rest that do much less. There’s no point comparing footballers to the work levels of any other profession.

Well it's a squad game, isn't it. Maybe we can't rely on Powell. But he's in my theoretical best eleven. We just need an alternative for when he's not available. That was Vrancic, l guess. Personally l'd try Clucas there at ten in a 4231 but recognise he's not greatly admired on this forum.

I'd be very much happier if MON moved Clucas and Powell on. Unfortunately there are no takers.

There was an article in the Sentinel that pointed out that over his career he's played an average of 16 games a season mainly because of injuries - which is an appalling. I'm not saying it is his fault but to claim Powell isn't injury prone isn't borne out by his track record.

Everything, the point being we deteriorate with age, ok he’s not 45 but his body won’t be as good as it was 4 years ago. Oh and using Ronaldo, potentially the fittest player in the last 20 years isn’t a great comparison. Most players ‘slow up’ into their 30s
