Ridiculous that it's such a story in 2022 but he's the first confirmed since Justin Fashanu.

There he is. Insane, really, that it's taken until the 3rd decade of the 21st century, but there you go. Hopefully others will be emboldened to come out and be themselves and it will quickly become completely unremarkable.
Only 17 years old and it must take a lot of courage to be the first to speak publicly about it. I hope he is allowed to live his life and develop his career in a regular way without anybody going bonkers lionising him, making it the most important thing about him forever or putting him on a pedestal like some kind of living deity, and similarly I hope he isn't subject to endless cynical speculation about his motives or uncharitable proclamations about nobody caring. And of course, hopefully he doesn't suffer any great discrimination or abuse from anyone in the game. I don't think he will.

This is awesome. And as has been said it shouldn’t be a story in the news but it absolutely is. Hopefully the first of many gay footballers that will feel comfortable with this and it’s our jobs as fans not discriminate them for it in any way shape or form.
This should be normal. This hopefully will be the first step to that.

The response to this is going to set the tone for years to come, as it did after the Fashanu case. I have faith in humanity that there'll be widespread support across the board.
It's a very courageous thing to do.

So what! Never quite sure what the hell it has to do with his job. Not sure why we need to know.

Shouldn't have to be done, but fair play to the lad for being brave enough to be the first to put his head above the parapet. I hope people react as they should by ignoring it, treating him as they would any other person and letting him live his life.....

This is ace though it shouldn't be a story in 2022. Just hope he doesn't get discriminated against in his careers in transfers and that because clubs wouldn't want to sign him because of the attention he will get. Hope this goes great for him and good luck to him.
Happened in the NFL last summer with Carl Nassib. Great for sport in general breaking the stigma. Though Gareth Thomas in Rugby has done ot since he came out.

Good for him.
Ridiculous its still taboo or an issue, but I await a cringeworthy moment when some smartarse creates a chant about it egged on by his gaffawing mates in B19 next season

He’s a lovely lad and all the older boys in the Blackpool academy, my son included, really look up to him.
This news changes absolutely nothing. The lads won’t bat an eyelid and will go about interacting with him as they’ve always done.

Good for him.
Brave but as others have said it’s a shame it’s a story as such given the times we live in.
Particularly liked this quote: “I am hoping that by coming out, I can be a role model, to help others come out if they want to. I am only 17 but I am clear that this is what I want to do and if, by me coming out, other people look at me and feel maybe they can do it as well, that would be brilliant.”
Hopefully it does support others who might want to come public or may feel they have to hide it because of the football culture. Thankfully I think a lot has changed both generally and in football since Fashanu and the majority will have a positive response, and it can arguably further this progress and support the conversation in general.

Good for him, shouldn't have to as has been said but good for him for not being afraid to be who he is. Hope the knuckledraggers don't come out when he's playing for Blackpool.

It shouldn’t be a story but sadly is. It’s clearly a massive stigma in football as the law of averages says there must be many more who’ve been too afraid to come out. Fair play to him for aettimg a precedent and hopefully if a few more follow it won’t be newsworthy anymore.

So what! Never quite sure what the hell it has to do with his job. Not sure why we need to know. And the next message down on this thread shows us exactly why this kind of thing is important. The ignorance is astounding. Meh I agree this is a huge moment and one for celebration, but think you’re over the top and like fishing to go after someone who (wrongly) doesn’t see this as a big moment but is of the mentality that we shouldn’t care about whether someone is gay or not; which is surely the long term goal anyway right?

True, the second sentence probably was uncalled for, though the fact is that he's doing it now so that others in the future don't have to. Breaking barriers in that way is so important and takes a huge amount of courage. It is most certainly newsworthy.

Just seen a clip of an interview he's done about it and one thing that struck me was how fed up he was of having to lie his way through his job and life, and how much of a relief it is now he has come out (hate that term).
How awful that someone has to live their life like that. I can't begin to imagine what it's like.
Having a child who is 9, it is apparent now the kind of education they are getting in schools from a young age about acceptance of people who are different and respect towards other peoples views and choices etc.
It makes me hopeful that we can severely reduce the hatred of anything different in society as we go through the generations.
I'm not naive to think we can eradicate that completely but getting it into an absolute minimum is surely achievable?
Wish the lad well. Hope he is given the time and space now to be accepted and to be allowed to live a free and happy life.

It’s an enormous moment without question - and maybe 15 years down the line when the 100th footballer comes out as gay and it’s on the news then optimist’s reaction will be entirely well timed. His only crime as far as I can tell was misreading the significance of a moment, and it’s an easy one to make seeing as we’ve all met/worked with/ have gay family members etc etc (some here might even be gay) it’s just football and a few other niche fields that are seemingly a generation behind the curve.

And I thought confirmation of Powell's extra 12 months would be the best news of the day.
As many have said, it shouldn't be important, but it is.
It's good to see Jake Daniels mention other openly gay athletes as inspirations, and he'll now be a massive inspiration to others, especially in football. Hopefully more players follow suit and gay male footballers aren't a news item by the end of the year.
And hopefully he has a long and successful career!

There are still a lot of concerns that openly gay players may be discriminated against in football. It shouldn’t happen, but just because it perhaps happens less/less openly than it has in decades gone by, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t still happen.
