Seems a sensible option for both player & club. If all's working out & it suits both parties then I'm sure he'll stay on until May 2023. But if for any reason he's struggling to get game time he may decide on a move to make sure he's playing in his career closing years. Or if we have someone else lined up and need to ease a wage up its Stoke's call aswell. After many years of long contracts being dished out like confetti a more measured approach does seem the best way to go for the time being. Good deal for everyone at this stage, by Christmas we will have an idea of how Souttar's recovery is going.

Great news Thought it would have been for a full season though. I'm sure it'll get reviewed again in 6 months time, its the best way of doing it imo, keeps him on his toes and we don't waste a wage on him if he does a Darren Fletcher and his legs go or he gets injured in the meantime.

He's a decent player and it's about right to keep him for 6months.

I think it’s a great decision to give him 6 months which I am sure will evolve into another 6 months to finish the season. Plus it’s a good plan to see how Harry comes back in after such a long lay off with his injury. I’m glad the club have got him to stay as I think he’s done a superb job for his age.

Great news. I’d imagine it’s 6 months so we can ease Soutter back after his long layoff. Jagielkas a great pro and can still hold his own at this level.

Sensible move. You'd think Souttar and Wilmot will be the first-choice pair, with Forrester and Taylor being eased in to cover or provide a third centre-back if needed. However, these two still carry a risk- having Jageilka here takes that into account. Six months is sensible too. If he still looks fine in November, give him another deal until the end of the season then.

Never mind 'good around the place', I think he's stood out as our best defender since he signed.
He did sign after Souttar was injured, didn't he?

I like the way Jags plays and the way he carries himself. Barring injury, I'd bet this one gets extended for the full year. Our club learning lessons and not dishing out 5 year contracts any more. How about that? It's great to see.

In The Premier League, if at that point we spend big and give out sensible 3 year contracts then can say lessons learned

At his age his legs could go at any moment, it could even happen this summer which makes sense to give him 6 months so we can cut our losses quickly if he's off the pace next season. And if he's still doing well, he'll get extended till the end of the season and because of his age it's highly unlikely he'll get poached. Sensible business.

In The Premier League, if at that point we spend big and give out sensible 3 year contracts then can say lessons learned I don't think it is quite that simple. The problem with 3 year contracts for big money signings is that you would end up renewing the contract every year or 18 months. If the contract runs down to 12 months left there is a serious risk that the player will just run down the last 12 months and leave for free. The real problem is buying the right players in the first place. I am pleased to see Jagielka re-sign. It has been a real eye opener to see just how fit he is at his age. (Makes me feel quite depressed!) His football brain also seems as sharp as ever and with his experience he can still anticipate problems earlier than any of our other defenders currently playing.

Great news. according to the Sentnul only three other players have played for Stoke in their 40s and one, Sir Stan, in their 50s. Mind you we have some in their 20s that play like they’re in their 40s. if Souttar returns healthy a back three of Jagielka, Souttar and Forrester is as good as it gets in this league - daft mistakes notwithstanding (many of those were at the hands of Chester and Harwood-Bellid, neither which are even decent subs, so we need to strengthen in that area.). Was Imbula one of the others

Smart business.
He’s clearly still able for it at this level and having an experienced pro with a decent attitude like him around can only be good for the younger lads

Helps the kids certainly.
We still need a younger senior - 31/34.
If we’re serious about promotion the ex-youth players are too unreliable to base a campaign on.

Excellent news. That means that Souttar does not need to be rushed in to be “the savior of our season”, which will give him proper time to recover from a nasty injury, especially for a man of his size. 👍. I doubt we’ll see Souttar back to his best until after Xmas taking into account the month break because of the World Cup.

Souttar showed strong leadership skills at a very young age. There’s no reason other young players couldn’t slot in seamlessly. “If you’re good enough. You’re old enough”.

Then other players see that whom you want to keep, so you are forced into longer multi-year contracts with them as well. Yep, good point.
