I remember him telling me all about it over a pint or 3 . Didn't we have quite a win in the late 70s away to someone in a friendly , Bren got a winner in a 1-0 or am I getting mixed up with an episode of Jossie's giants or something? I think I remember a dodgy 3-2 to CSKA reading about in the papers

It's funny how things go, people used to laugh at the Anglo-Italian Cup but in many ways it was 50 years ahead of its time.
European football for teams who don't make the European Cup, now laughably referred to as the 'Champions League' of course.
A forerunner for the Europa League and the Europa Conference if anyone knows the difference between the two.
Wish we could somehow find a way back in to Europe, I don't care how dodgy the format!

If we could take a pen would have made the final also . Some of the worst pens have ever seen

An ill conceived kick about .. the football on the pitch was the same too
would still go if resurrected yet again.. but let’s be honest few would and who could blame them , the last incarnation was bad enough as too when we played Roma in Austria ..their Curva Sud ultras weren’t too impressed with some of our lot ..don’t think you’re suppose to try to set fire to their main flag 🤣

But it’d be very moody .. now Italy for non football , totally agree Now an Anglo / South American comp I’d whole heartedly support and welcome

Thanks for the replies.
37,500 is an amazing crowd for a group match in a competition that is given very little regard. Would have loved to have been there What a great win that must have been in such hostile surroundings.
There must have a been a fair few Stokies in there surely, though we are talking about an era when going to a match like that would be at least 2/3 days off work and with most jobs very little flexibility from what I recall.
11,000 for the home game doesn't seem such a big crowd but looking at League games we were only getting 13,000 at home to Man City and Notts Forest in that season.
Interesting that the crowds for League games were so low too.

It felt like an insight into a totally different culture at the time and the games were competitive as far as I remember.

Interesting that the crowds for League games were so low too. TBH I’d be very surprised if many did the trip back then .. due to logistics and it’s low level ranking ..no cheap flights for a start , charter holidays for the masses had only recently kicked in and Italy was always seen as an expensive destination as opposed to the Costas , and charter flights had yet to morph into pay an extra £1 for an unnamed hotel that nobody used , which were the forerunner of flight only .. anyone who’s driven there in more modern times will know it’s a decent trip even in a modern car .. 50 years ago car would be out for many But agree it’d be good to hear from anyone who did make the trip ..I know and speak to people who did domestic friendlies back then ..but never heard them speak of anything bar their trip to the Ajax friendly and a couple of other places ( not to be confused with the UEFA cup game ) Started going friendlies in late 70s, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Reading .. been going practically every year since ..tho missed out on some epic places for literally not being aware they were being played ..I suspect other than for an odd well healed supporter or someone already holidaying there then a game at Roma early 70s would get the same advance warning ..ie nil suspect most wouldn’t have been aware until it was played

I remember the game at the Vic against Roma. Thought it was a draw plus the players spent much of the game battling with each other.

I was there, they were a very dirty team. Got loads of abuse as they went down the tunnel
