Out of our 15 defeats in league and cup this season 14 of them have been by the odd goal with only Fulham convincingly beating us 3-0.I accept no matter what the score is they’re all defeats but surely it shows how close we are to becoming a play off/promotion pushing team in the near future? Is it a mentality thing,a tactical thing or just the fact we’re having no luck with decisions etc?Thoughts?

For me it comes down to a team that makes too many mistakes, giving away 'easy' goals.
It does tend toward the theory that MON is too cautious, allowing teams to come at us, thus exposing us to the risk of mistakes. It's not as though we are 'rapid' on the break.
We now have the talent to take the game to the opposition and, maybe, by doing so we can score more goals and avoid the pressure which has led to so many being conceded.
I would certainly like to see us play more in the style that was shown against Palace for the remainder of this season

It’s a conceding one more than the opposition thing 😊
Seriously I suppose it shows we are always in there with a chance and shouldn’t take to much to turn around

It's a bit of everything if we're honest. A lack of mentality, a bit of inexperience, probably a bit short on peak fitness, bad luck with injuries and of course, the manager and his staff need to take their fair share.

On the other side of the coin we rarely rip teams apart either. In both cases I would say it’s a mentality issue - no killer instinct.

Yes I think the one biggest thing is the loss of Souttar because of how comfortable he is/was in the system

Is it a mentality thing,a tactical thing or just the fact we’re having no luck with decisions etc?Thoughts? Stoke have to play well to win and at home bar the Pboro game (we played poorly) we have won games comfortably no ugly wins. Away i have not seen all the games but can only think of the Bpool and Luton games we have won and had to battle a bit the others were more comfortable but we do not seem capable of winning when not at a decent performance level. I see opposition teams come to Stoke and who are comfortable in their system and work hard do not need a worldie to win it but benefit from poor goalkeeping or stray pass, this happens more often than Stoke take advantage of similar situations. I thought with the squad we had early season a top 10 finish should be achievable and also since Jan window closed even with injuries and could still happen. What i do not see is a team that can win ugly thus gain them extra points to make a real promotion challenge. We look either a good or poor team in a game there is no in between.

The margin between success and failure in this division is very narrow indeed. If we had won five of those and drawn four instead of eight we’d be top second. Frustrating init. If my auntie had….etc.

I would love to win ugly but don’t think we have a fight in the team. For me we seem to produce good performances when we are playing top team but our downfall is losing games we should be winning and that is down to a number of reasons

Plus the points we have thrown away by drawing when we were ahead (especially when we were against 10 men and no goalkeeper)

Under Jones, we often lost by the odd goal and conceded two goals per match. There were some bigger reverses but not too many.
We don’t seem to have moved forwards too much except O’Neill’s team pick up enough points in the first few months to keep us out of danger.
I also think this squad is much stronger than the one Jones had.

It is arguably stronger when everyone is available, but even that is largely thanks to O'Neill - bringing through the likes of Souttar, Campbell (who he convinced to stay) etc. I've been frustrated at times this season with some of O'Neill's decisions but can't think of many managers I'd rather be in charge. Certainly none of the names mentioned on this board or who we're usually linked with. Next season is the big one if we don't go onto a magical run to reach the playoffs this. If the bulk of our first team largely stays fit next season, with a couple of loan signings that hit the ground running, we should be challenging for automatic promotion.

It’s a rebuilding job again next season. The loans will probably go back and there’s quite a few players whose contracts expire at the end of the season

I think it's pretty much a bit of what everyone says , one big problem I think is we consistently make poor decisions/mistakes in or around both penalty boxes.
We are one of the best teams in the division playing between the 2 boxes, must me one of the worst in them.

Just watch how often the full backs pass backwards. The play is miles too slow. Throw ins from the opposition half as far forward as the penalty area often end up back with our keepers. We've got to play more on the front foot with far more drive and urgency. It stems from the coaches and management.

I think it was first half v Luton we had a throw near their penalty area and within 15 seconds the ball is back with Bursik without a Luton player touching it. Not an isolated instance either.
