Do we need another thread stating the obvious? Fuck it, why not.
Nathan Jones described Luton as 'front-footed', 'athletic' and 'aggressive'. We were passive, slow and soft. Same story for the last few years. Brazil or a Sunday League team, if you show less desire than the opposition you lose.
It's a footballing cliche, but you need to earn the right to play football. We need to force our passing football on teams. Not sit there waiting for it to happen, then whinge at the referee when it doesn't work and the opposition bully us. Bully them back. Run more than them. Play as a collective. Forwards, defend, put in a tackle. Everyone should want the ball.
As much as our players think they're great. They aren't. And MON needs to tell them so. If we're going to win anything, the attitude needs to be right. That's every game. Every mid week game and against teams below us. Not just when we're on the telly or playing a sexy team.
Anyway sorry for boring you with the same old stuff. It's fucking obvious to us at least.

Luton were there for the taking first half, we dominated possession and territory and Campbell must have been one on one with their full back on 6 or 7 occasions. But my God our attacking intent was so ponderous and slow it was like the players had literally just woken up. MON should have swapped the two wide players after 15 minutes to see if we had more joy producing actual chances as Campbell's feet and brain clearly weren't connected. Second half was just absolutely woeful, all their "front footed" "aggressive" and "athletic" pretty much came after they took the lead in fairness, until that point it was just a really really bad game of football, our response to going behind was non-existent.......

It has long been a concern of mine that we are trying to play in a way that we aren’t actually quite good enough for and boy does the Championship expose this sometimes.

You’re right. We don’t need another thread.

Their players look like they'd run through a brick wall for their team; ours plod about like they've not got a care in the world.
Give players a system and way of playing they understand and can manage to pull off, and most will give 100%. On the other hand, play them in positions they're uncomfortable in, isolate them, give them uncertainty and you see players who look like they don't give a toss, when in reality they either don't know what they're supposed to be doing or just aren't capable of the job asked of them.
O'Neil has to stop playing Wilmot at right back, needs to drop Tymon and simply has to get Powell closer to whichever lightweight striker of several that he wants to pick. That would go a long way to stopping this disjointed mess we've got at the moment. Get the system and selections correct first, then it'll becomes apparent which players just haven't got the heart for it.

How many of their players would we welcome in our squad.
On paper that was a straightforward win for Stoke.
However, teamwork and motivation can tip the balance in the opposite direction as they did last night.

He was quick and willing and could have got a couple.

I get what your'e saying about systems but confusion over systems and style of play shouldn't suddenly strip a player of the ability to control the ball and pass it to someone in red and white stripes. None of our players seemed capable of doing that last night especially in the second half. It would be interesting to see Wilmott's pass completion stats. We were also slow on the ball and lethargic off it. How many times did Baker and Bellis get caught in possession? The notable exception being the much maligned Joe Allen. Or was it just a case that he was less shit than the others?

MON thinks the shithousery, strength and fitness levels needed in this league is beneath us. He trains and sets the team up like an international side. Slow ponderous build up play that’s easily negated by teams running around and applying pressing tactics. The minute you limit the time our players have on the ball, they go to pieces. We can’t even throw the ball to one of our own players most of the time! He’s not prepared to do the dirty work and you can see it in the players attitude. They are apologetic. We have basically become Arsenal. Rough us up a bit, put the pressure on and watch us disintegrate.

I am not irritated by "sack the manager/keep the manager" popping up in every thread because people are right to question/criticize. These results speak for themselves. Welcome to the WTF Season. Every time we show promise WTF? Here comes another WTF capitulation that should have been a win. The points we have thrown away could have comfortably seen us in 1st or 2nd place right now - WTF? Our in-game strategy WTF? Our lineups WTF? Fundamental skills - WTF? Set-Pieces - WTF? WTF - do we practice? and it goes on...
But any new manager hoping to have any sustained success here MUST also convince ownership to adopt a whole new club-leadership structure & approach. Otherwise it's yet another total reboot for nothing.
Edit: And I have a Boston Terrier who would make one hell of a winger for us. She can even control a ball. But they haven't watched her 25 times...

For that game let's settle for "Terriers vs Training Cones"
