Because he has a bad game, he’s no longer the player who makes a difference in the team? Without Powell last season, we’d have gone down. It's not the fact that he had a bad game that's acceptable but it's the fact that in a game which was must win or end of the season for us he just didn't stand up to be counted. As one of only 4 starting players over 25 he was needed to put in a shift and he didn't. He is our most important and talented players but the best players show that in the toughest of games. Allen raised his game last night to match the importance of the game and even when he's having a stinking game never ever goes missing. Baker, Powell and Moore should have done the same. After last night who would you have as captain next season? We've either got to keep Jagielka or Allen if not both after that shower last night in my opinion. Baker and Powell just hid. I would put the armband on Souttar.

That puts to bed him being the difference. Or some kind of saviour. Never seen a more disinterested and absolutely dismal performance in my life. Not the player you want in the trenches. How he didn't get dragged at half time I'll never know. He should be fucking ashamed. What a useless "I think I'm better than everyone else" tosser. Wank. Because he has a bad game, he’s no longer the player who makes a difference in the team? Without Powell last season, we’d have gone down. We'd be close this season too without his goals the way its been going.

I know it's not his best/preferred position but I'm still not adverse to seeing Powell left of a front 3 in a 4-3-3 formation with a midfield of Baker-Allen-Sawyers and a front 3 of Campbell/Brown-Maja-Powell. If it gives us the balance between attack and defence I could certainly live with it especially if JPB is out with his groin problem......... Or MON can stop pissing about and play 4-2-3-1 which will accommodate his better players. I was talking about away at Bournemouth, but that system didn't help us last night as the players were miles off it.......

Fair enough my mistake, I just can't get my head around why he wouldn't go back to what has brought him the most success and seems to actively avoid it.

He wasn't one of the leaders and certainly not a player for when the going gets tough. My problem with Souttar is a) will he be fit at the start of the season b) will he be at the club past January and c) I'm not even sure he reads the game well enough himself to be able to organise others.

Captains don’t really do much on the pitch anymore, or anywhere to be honest. It just seems more like a tradition than a duty.

Last night Allen definitely was leading by example, much better to see than Baker's waving of his arms. Not a critic of Baker I think he looked good first few games, not so good against Birmingham and anonymous last night. It worries me with him that when he finds out this is what Championship football is like most of the time he'll want a move.

It's not his first rodeo at this level to be fair and the Turkish League outside of the top 3-4 isn't especially high quality either.

He looks like he has a lot of ability and even when he doesn’t play well, he’s still managed to score (his 4th goal in 8 games as well). That said, he’s unlikely to go further up the footballing pyramid without producing the goods here first.

I hope not because I really like him but there must be a reason why none of his loan clubs wanted him and it can't be wages as he was prepared to take a massive cut to come to Stoke.

Could it have been that he'd have cost a fee to them and he possibly still harboured ambitions of making it at Chelsea, whereas it was clear the gig was up this season and he didn't cost us a transfer fee?

Powell was very poor last night, all aspects of his game. However his season has stumbled since his original injury and shouldn’t be forgotten.
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned but Philips was stripped to come on and the injury to Tymon changed the substitution. Whether it was Powell who was going to be replaced isn’t known, I think he would have been.
