That puts to bed him being the difference. Or some kind of saviour. Never seen a more disinterested and absolutely dismal performance in my life. Not the player you want in the trenches. How he didn't get dragged at half time I'll never know. He should be fucking ashamed. What a useless "I think I'm better than everyone else" tosser. Wank. this is reactionary bullshit at its finest. Our most important player- he was poor tonight- but all were. The ineptitude of the 3 forwards and their shocking movement doesn’t help a player like him

Powell was shit. Everyone was shit apart from Joe Allen. The key to success is good players keeping fit and playing together regularly. We've used 32 players this season. massive point this- no wonder we’re so disjointed

To constantly look for a scape-goat for every appalling performance is missing the bigger point.
All players have bad games but our problems are much more substantial than that. It just diverts attention.

Yes and what creative threat that is.... I agree we would be worse off without him, but I don't think we would be significantly worse. We would end up mid table again anyway just as we have with him season after season. Therefore, I don't understand the splurge surrounding him. He is far too inconsistent and his goals return is absolutely nothing to shout about. His form is consistently sporadic, thus he's probably not good enough to help us get promoted. We need a squad of exceptional players to get promoted, And I don't think we are capable of recruiting that squad nor utilising them properly (as O'niell is now demonstrating with at many players with apparent potential). Bellis' loan is an absolute disaster. I don't think JPB will reflect all that glowingly on winning 1 game in what may well be the next 10 games (given our consistent inability to win, 2 in 11, 1 win at home in 4 months....). This is pretty embarrassing either way. Powell isn't the problem but the team is nowhere near good enough for promotion with the current manager. Next season is just as likely to be a disaster than a success, but most likely just another mid table shite. He is generally consistent though, if you look at his contribution over the last couple of seasons. Who are you comparing him to, exactly, in his position? For a bloke who doesn’t play as an out and out striker his goal return is entirely respectable, 14th in the division last year and nearly 1 in 2 this season before he broke his leg. He will most likely be injured for significant proportions of every season, and this has been the case throughout his career. I will compare him to other top players in the division and their teams performances in the table. Nick Powell plays for a fully fledged mid table championship team nothing more. He will be unlikely to ever play at even a top championship level, either because of injury, or his lack of consistency. He's a very good player, at our level. Mid table plodders. He doesn't really shine at this level either consistently, otherwise we wouldn't be mid table. I also don't think we can afford him after next season, and as stated that could easily bean absolute rabble of unpredictable signings which will inevitably fail (based on all current evidence) to push us any higher than mid table. I absolutely expect us now to finish lower than our previous 2 seasons. I believe that was suggested to be an absolute cataclysmic failure of management in another thread? It now looks a likely possibility given our continued form.

Powell had a nightmare, but he’s one out of very few who’s capable of winning us a game.
Played out of position tonight in my opinion. You want him just off the forward, using his physical presence and footballing brain to pick up pockets of space. Tonight he was too deep, & appeared to be one the left of a midfield 3. It just doesn’t suit him.
Some on here need to give their head a wobble.

and still probably our third-best player tonight This. He was poor, but probably only Allen and Bursik were better! There was a guy sat infront of me that slagged Bursik off from start to finish. At one point, even having a go at him when the ball was in the Luton half. Very bizzare to say the least

What it does is shine a light on the fact that we’re a one man team for all the shiny new toys. When he turns up we look like a reasonable team. When he doesn’t (and no player does every week) you get turgid shite like tonight. We should have more to us than just him. We don’t. The manager has to go Rob. Do you agree?

We're back to square one again though aren't we? Playing him left side of centre means you are always risking him being kicked and punched out of games, in amongst the good games. Powell has always, and I mean ALWAYS been best when he's played centrally, close to the striker and allowed a free role. Tonight it would have given Luton's two ball winners something to think about and would have given some much needed support for poor Maja. It's a frustration with this manager that he has to shoe horn players into a system whether it's good for the player or team or not, and once he's wedded to it there is seemingly no willingness to change it unless he's completely forced to OR he's been on a post season piss up in the lakes. Absolutely this. Powell's lame games have always come when he's part of a middle 3 in a 433 set up. In that set up his better performances have come when he's part of the front 3 but as you say played centrally just behind a striker with freedom is his Goldilocks position (Just Right). As soon as I saw line up thought to myself 'Well that's Powell out of contention for MOM'

This season he broke his leg. Which ‘other top players in the division’ do you mean? Name names?

I’m not especially bothered about that though, much like I wasn’t with players like Fuller who also probably should’ve had better careers than they did. He’s incredibly important to us and that’s all that matters.

I share people's frustration but good players have poor games and dips in form.
What we mustn't do, and it feels like something of a Stoke trait, is to turn on the few good players we have.
Powell is returning from a long term injury and last night was, what his 3rd game back?
Same with Ty. The stick he's getting in some quarters is ludicrous

I say it every single time. He's either a 1 out of 10, or a 9 out of 10.
You can't carry players like that. Constant 7 and 8 players you need.

There were 2 players worse than Powell Campbell and wilmot And how can he be one of the best players in the league when he doesn’t even play in half of them Maja was fucking atrocious for a start. Tymon had a stinker. Baker might as well not have been on for 93 minutes. JPB hid. Bellis looked scared. All played worse than Powell imo. I thought Bellis was the worst on the pitch to be honest. He obviously can read situations, because he moves into decent positions at times, but he also makes 3-4 major mistakes a game.

I know it's not his best/preferred position but I'm still not adverse to seeing Powell left of a front 3 in a 4-3-3 formation with a midfield of Baker-Allen-Sawyers and a front 3 of Campbell/Brown-Maja-Powell. If it gives us the balance between attack and defence I could certainly live with it especially if JPB is out with his groin problem.........

It's not the fact that he had a bad game, that's acceptable but it's the fact that in a game which was must win or end of the season for us he just didn't stand up to be counted. As one of only 4 starting players over 25 he was needed to put in a shift and he didn't. He is our most important and talented players but the best players show that in the toughest of games. Allen raised his game last night to match the importance of the game and even when he's having a stinking game never ever goes missing. Baker, Powell and Moore should have done the same. After last night who would you have as captain next season? We've either got to keep Jagielka or Allen if not both after that shower last night in my opinion. Baker and Powell just hid.
