The main problem is the chap who picks the team and has no idea how to handle the pressure games I don't agree with that. He's done better than all but one manager. Was tactically inept in his 2 big games after taking early leads

Gaz got found out a bit second half as usual

Defence is why I think England will have only a very slim chance of progressing much beyond the quarter finals unless we get huge slices of luck which is of course possible in any tournament. I just think any decent forward players will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing England. We have a dearth of options in that department at present. Walker is the exception. Our midfield is going to have its work cut out protecting our defence for sure which limits other options. We have a number of top footballers in the side, amongst the very best in the world. The opposition defenders will have their work cut out to stop us. The main issue is Maguire and the lack of a tried and tested replacements plus injuries at left back. History says you have be solid at the back to win big tournaments. It's difficult to win it with only good forward players and thats potentially a big problem for England. Folk can have a go a Southgate all they want but it's not down to him that we have big issues with the defence.

He tried to it a couple of times and the ref ignored the previous one, he did it again which led to a goal. He still does it. Great player though As we've seen with England, when leading V a good side they don't have a game plan, the same way Italy did at the Euros with a manager who knew what to do to get the best out of what weren't a great bunch of players, they had some very good ones but not a great side. Mount was an absolute waste of shorts that day. Croatia were allowed to boss the semi and were always going to win that game. To allow Modric to boss a game was asking for it. No coincidence they lost v France, Croatia and Italy despite possibly having a better side on paper, maybe not V France. Better coached sides at that level

His subs and game management are generally atrocious unfortunately. But, he seems a genuine guy and I like him so hope he takes us to glory, he has no excuses really as he’s now a very experienced international manager

Just watching MOTD and the wolves vs palace game. I remember Eze tormenting us for QPR but can’t remember Olise too much at reading.
However at Palace they’ve both come on this season and established themselves as premier league players. Do either of these have a shot as a wildcard?

Think he can still play for England or has that stopped now? Eze has got a few caps but never really given a chance. Given the form of Rashford I can’t help but feel there’s a spot in there. His set pieces and ability to make things happen in tight spaces can be important in tournaments.

I'd take him ahead of Rashford yes Think Gordon will be ahead of him for that left side spot If Foden is used on the left then that leaves Rashford, Grealish, Gordon and Eze fighting for one spot probably Saka for the right with Palmer showing very strong for inside forward and wide right The nag re Palmer is all his goals are at home however he's playing (no starring) in a misfiring Chelsea side

Preliminary squad named on Tuesday apparently, and will be bigger than 26.
Assuming that these 15 are in if fit, which seems fair given they're all at least 1/9 with the bookies:
Pickford, Ramsdale Walker, TAA, Stones, Maguire, Trippier Bellingham, Rice, Gallagher Foden, Saka, Palmer Kane, Watkins
The other 11 he'll end up going with seems total guesswork, based on finger-in-air injury prognosis of about 5 defenders and a feel for what Southgate normally does.
1 from: Pope (8/15), Henderson (15/8), Butland (11/4), Trafford (7/1)
At least 5 from: Branthwaite (1/5), Gomez (2/7), Guehi (1/2), Chilwell (4/7), Shaw (8/13), Dunk (Evs), Konsa (6/4), Colwill (6/4) James (2/1) , Dier (5/2), Lewis (9/2), Mitchell (9/2), White (5/1), Livramento (8/1), Tomori (9/1), Quansah (16/1)
2, possibly 3 from: Mainoo (2/7), Henderson (2/7), Wharton (11/4), Jones (10/1), Phillips, JWP (10/1)
2, possibly 3 from: Maddison (1/6), Gordon (2/5), Rashford (4/6), Grealish (4/7), Eze (5/6) Bowen (10/11), Elliott (11/4), Sancho (5/1), , Rogers (16), Sterling (20)
Maybe 1 more from: Toney (8/15), Solanke (8/1), Wilson (12/1)
Shaw (chance of being on the bench for Cup Final?) Chilwell (bench yesterday after a couple of months out. Played for a few weeks in the winter, again after a few months out, when he looked poor. So who knows?) James - great player and playing again after 4-5 months out. Normally you'd rush him back and risk him, but any point taking him along with Walker, TAA and Trippier, even in a 26? Guehi - 2 brief sub apperances after 4-5 months out Maguire - possibly back for cup final.
Can't see him risking both Shaw and Chilwell, so does that mean you muddle through with 'do a job' types or take a swing on someone like Tyrick Mitchell who has the advantage of being uninjured and left-footed?
I'd probably take a punt on Shaw, given any fitness encouragement then go with Mitchell as a left-footed fit option, knowing Trippier can play there too
Don't think Maddison or Rashford have shown enough, especially with Eze playing as he is
Midfield is another weak area - it must be if Conor Gallagher is nailed-on for the squad. In the absence of any other options, I'd be tempted to roll the dice on Mainoo and Adam Wharton, someone who actually enjoys playing deeper, as the squad options, and I'd be tempted to start Bellingham a bit deeper too.

Was tactically inept in his 2 big games after taking early leads He wasn’t, the players were! The players were visibly tiring, fresh legs were needed in the midfield v Croatia. V Italy, two aged slow centre backs on yellow cards, put the young pacey forwards on, and not 30 seconds before the end so they can miss a penalty.

So can't see him being chucked into a back 4. Can see him going with Chilwell now he's back in training and on the bench, with the knowledge he's got Trippier as a steady option on his wrong side. You certainly can't take both Shaw and Chilwell with their track record. But got to take another left-footer in the 26. Can only really see Mitchell at Palace or Hall at Newcastle as an outsider.
