That’s the issue though, there’s rarely a time he isn’t coming back from injury. It is and it’s an issue because no one else can do what he does up front for us bar Powell. Jacob Brown is a bigger threat than Fletcher and offers far more.

We literally lost the Preston game because he went off.
There’s no need to get dramatic because he had a bad game.

Shouldn't start a match, maybe worth bringing on for the last 25 minutes of a game if all else fails. We rarely play in a way that uses him for his ability now days. Think the same about Campbell

Fletcher is a really important, aging professional for us. He should be used in such a role. He’s most effective when he can act as the supporting striker to someone coming off of him, but with Campbell not in form, that only leaves JPB to do that.
He’s slow and frustratingly, he has always been a player that will have 2-3 good games, get a niggle, miss 2 games, come back, play poorly for 2 games as he gets up to speed and then repeat the cycle.

Fletcher is a very clever but immobile player whose time is up. the last few games that he has played he hasn't even been able to win headers and flick them on. His goalscoreing is very poor. In fact he has much more offsides against him than goals for.Has a terrible record for games missed as against games he has received payment for. He is no part of Stoke's future. If we could get a club to take him on loan, even if we paid half his wages, I would be amazed.

By Stoke's not very impressive standards his goalscoring is adequate, but I wouldn't even say that his main job for us is goalscoring. It's more to set others up and create space for them. He did that very well with Campbell and also for Powell's threat on goal. So far not so well with Brown, whose football intelligence is not - yet - up to scratch.

What does he offer, apart from willingness to run any which way he can? He's a bigger threat because Brown works as a nine and Fletcher as a ten. Try switching the two - but just do it in your own mind, please. It's a horrible thought. Because he offers very little footballwise. His failure to do basic things like controlling the ball and pick a pass for a team mate would see our goal threat come to nothing at all. He does have more pace than Fletcher though.

Brown's far from perfect but I personally think he offers far more than Fletcher this season.

I like Fletcher, but this season apart from 2 or 3 games he’s largely been offside a lot, hit the post when he should have scored, or been injured.
Time for him to go home to Scotland, he does so with my best wishes…..

There might be a limited role for him but he strikes me as a talented player who is now paying the price for too much time on the bevvies earlier in his career. He was renowned for leading all night drinking sessions at Sunderland. He looks fairly knackered.

A 9 is the old fashioned centreforward, the 10 plays behind the 9; some, just yards behind like Fletcher, some deeper like Powell or Vrancic. Some is an extra striker with late runs which are hard for defenders to pick out, some are the actual playmaker. Some take no part in defensive matters, some become the first line of defence like Walters did. Of course Fletcher wears the nine shirt just to confuse matters, but his role has evolved under O'Neill. Brown plays where Puskas played, Fletcher more where di Stefano positioned himself, if that helps.

If a proper number 9 is a Ricardo fuller/ James Beattie type , who is going to be a direct threat in the air and on the deck, we simply don't have one .
Mitrovic would be great , solanke fine , but as it stands, we don't have one
Whoever plays up front , brown or Fletcher , they have to be judged by their goals and assists .
Going back a long way back , it could have been argued that big mama sidibe, put in a lot of work , dropping back in to midfield , when we lost the ball, and simply looking at his stats, might have undervalued what he did .
But brown and Fletcher are forwards , who are no where near as good as fuller or Beattie , but have to be judged on their goals and assists.
So for me , I would rather have brown than Fletcher .

A topic about Fletcher with Brown in the mix and we get Ferenc Puskás and Alfredo di Stéfano popping up. Just brilliant. Mind you, only the oldies will understand the paradox of your subtle analogy. OS.

I would disagree that he plays the no.10 role. When he plays he is the target man when played long and plays the central role whether as a lone striker or in a front 3.

He has the physical build and height of the target when the ball is played long but we increasingly dont do that anymore, as MON insists on playing from the back. Some players do/did anyway and they are on the way out or have been sold/sent back, such as Batth and Ostigard, and Fox who appears to have little future with Stoke. A lot obviously depends on who his partners are. DWP and the Villa loanee have very different styles, and I really need to await how the team settles down. All I can say is I really liked the Powell Fletcher Campbell combo, which looked good until Ty was injured.

I'm not sure that jok(k)er ever saw Real Madrid in that era.

Fletcher was never bought in to be a 90 minute player, I believe injuries this season took it in a different direction and apparently he is a great influence in the dressing room and with the younger players. For me, I’d like to see him stay, he can still do a job for us being in the squad
