Second replay of League Cup Semi Final at Old Trafford. Very wet night. I went there by train with Β£1 in my pocket which along with my wallet was pick pocketed outside the ground. Lot of money then for a 17 year old. Had my ticket in my hand so managed to get on the Stretford End.
Wonderful result and we were off to Wembley.
Bit of film from that tempestuous night:

I was there too and got my nose busted by a west ham fan. The plod had everything well organized before the game, but after we all left from the same station. Total shambles, but who cares? We won.

Most people consider Banksβs save against Pele in the 1970 World Cup was the greatest save of all time. However, Banks himself maintained this one was better. It is hard to argue with that.

I was there at Old Trafford with my dear (long since departed) old dad. That game had everything, a truly brilliant night for our club. My dad often talked about that game as one of the standout games for Stoke.
Great times, great memories.

Fantastic night and great memories standing on the Stretford End even the pouring rain didnβt put a dampener on it. Maybe the biggest ever Stoke following to a league ground.

I wasn't there - something which even to this day I regret. I was on Newcastle Borough Council and was Vice-chair of the Highways Committee. The Borough Engineer had produced a highly controversial proposal for a new road, called the East-West Road which would have demolished loads of houses and had a viaduct over the Lyme Valley. It was said that if it wasn't built, by 1990 ( which seemed an age away ! ) the Town centre would be gridlocked twice a day with commuter traffic from the west of the town going to/from Hanley/Stoke. A public information meeting was organised for the night of the game at Old Trafford. The Leader of the Council said that as Vice-chair of the Highways Committee I absolutely had to be there and not at OT, or else !! Perhaps due to the weather or everyone being either at OT or listening on Radio Stoke, the public meeting was very poorly attended, which made it even worse. The road of course was never built. The predicted traffic chaos by 1990 never happened, but I missed one of the most dramatic and important Stoke games ever. I still feel it !

I remember the persistent rain. We were in the Stretford End which was covered but the West Ham fans were in the open end and must have been soaked lol. Remember being in a packed pub at the end of the road after and having fought my way to the bar my throat was so sore with all the shouting I couldn't tell them what I wanted and had to just point. Great night and great memories.

Living in South London at the time and being only 15 at the time there was no way I was allowed to catch a train up from Euston on my own with West Ham fans! Then get back at 1:30am to bike it back to South London and go to school the following morning.
I was enjoyed being able to tell all the other kids who supported London clubs that we were at Wembley.
What a period to be a Stoke Supporter!

Remember queuing all night in freezing weather to get a ticket for the final. Queue snaked from Boothen End, across the car park behind Butlet Street stand and in the alley behind Stoke End. Apart from the cold were the occasional renditions of "Hey You, back of the queue". Don't suppose a repeat albeit with new geography any time soon?

"Heaven inspire me to find some new superlatives. Even if I live to 100 I shall never see a game such as this" Eric Todd, writing in the Guardian. I think it was the best game I have ever seen. At the very least it is in the top3. Bloody freezing and wet though.
