The Elvis Costello thread got me to thinking how influential record shops were in my youth. In a society dominated by Apple music, Spotify and the like its difficult for some to remember a time when you had to hunt for records.
The excitement and comeradere of the music buying experience. It was like football support in as much as a clique went to their favourite shop, favourite seller the guy who could get everything. Being introduced to something new by listening in the shop for the first time. The rest of an album being a curious mystery until you got it home.
I also remember the joy of mixing travelling away to Stoke matches and calling in to buy vinyl at some terraced shop to pick up a foreign import or look for an out of pressing album or single.
I just wondered if anyone had any stories to share of finding records, travelling, waiting, bumping into a band member whole browsing or a tale or two. They seem to be important parts of my youth which are difficult to share with anyone under 35.

I was chatting with a mate at the game on Sunday that I only used to use Mike Lloyd to get tickets. There was one that opened about halfway down London Road Stoke. I don't think it stayed open long. Other than Lonnies by the Wheatsheaf there was also one on the opposite corner to Mintons Statue before Sainsbury which I thought was Terry Blood. This link has a few of them. strandrecordsstoke.com/2020/04/04/growing-up-in-stokes-record-shops/oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/253080/record-shops-hanley

There used to be Bevans in Longton, and also I remember there was a stall in Longton market where they would order records if you asked them.

Saturday afternoons when there was no match we'd do the rounds up Hanley. Mike Lloyd's, Terry Bloods, W H Smiths when they had a record department down stairs and later Our Price and Lotus came on the scene. There was also a small store in the old market hall run by a quite flirty middle aged lady.Everything about it from the musty smell to the thrill of flipping through the racks and finding the record you want with full gatefold sleeve and lyric sheet insert was like a drug. Great days. Been in Rubber Soul a few times which is an Aladins Cave if you're into vinyl. Bit of a tight squeeze though if you're a tad on the portly side!

Had a good second hand section. Bought Led Zep 1 in there for 95p in 1977. I've since discovered its a second pressing and worth around 200 quid. Which is nice!

I remember Tiswas making an appearance in Woolies record department to promote the bucket of water song. Chris Tarrant, Bob Carolgees with spit the dog and John Gorman. It was mayhem. The shelves were virtually stripped bare! 😄
