I know but I can't see the point wasting what little money on we have on someone who's highly unlikely to make it in the championship based on his history. It's taken us the last few years to get rid of deadwood we don't need to be adding to it again. hobnob.royals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=186593&p=4887841&hilit=baker#p4887841Reading fans largely liked him, Gary One said he'd be an "orgasmic" signing. very positive however they are from two years ago

I'd be much happier if it was on a short term deal but anything over 18 months would be too much of a risk and I'd doubt he'd join on those terms.

But that’s the cleft stick we’re in at the minute or so it seems. Anyone half decent wants a long contract but we can’t afford to be doling them out willy nilly anymore.

Seems like he's struggled to find a home, but genuinely there is a serious player in there if you can get the best out of him. Watched him a few times for England U21s & he was someone you took note of, just doesn't look like it has quite happened for him for whatever reason.
I'd sooner we signed him and tried to get the best out of him than sign a mid 30s journeyman.

I agree with Gary that it's a risk, but we're not only low on midfield numbers, but Allen and Clucas are hardly the future of our central midfield. He should be able to see a career pathway and I'm hoping once he stops being a Chelsea player, he'll settle in his new home and get on with his career. I'm in, even though it's a reach for us...

To be honest and I make no bones about this, I would love to see Lewis Baker in a Stoke City shirt. I’ve seen enough of him to know with certainty that there’s a quality footballer in there.

Why is it a reach for us? Am I missing something? He's available as a free transfer isn't he? Surely even we can afford a free transfer. As a young player with no transfer fee it's about as risk free as it gets even if we have to offer him a 3 year deal. EDIT - ah the thing I'm missing is that he's now 26. I was, wrongly, assuming he was still a youngster.

I’m not sure it’s not much of a “risk” when you look at his CV - he looks about our level, with the upside that he still just about has enough time to develop into a Prem player. Sign him up.

If there is any legs in this, I think it could be just what we need. We aren't sitting at the big table any more and this signing would make perfect sense. He might not have settled anywhere because he's always been a Chelsea player but that's no disgrace. If he moves on properly, i.e. a free transfer, he might actually settle.
He'll be miles better than some of the options we have. Get it done.

I don't get why so many people are seemingly against this signing. Even if he turns out to be bang average it'll still be a huge improvement to the team overall to have someone playing the CDM role who can actually play the role.

I suppose if we can get ToB off the wage bill this summer then it won't be a bad replacement as he can't be any worse.

Exactly hence why it's a no thanks from me. From I have seen of him he has a good range of skills. he tracks back and defends well, good long accurate passes, goal provider, scores from free kicks and scores some opportunist goals, but no dought the fans!!! will not give him a chance and destroy his confidence, just like they have with Surridge, Ostigarde, Ince, Brown etc.
