Been watching a bit of different sport on tv lately, like British ice hockey, british basketball, etc
It got me thinking would these sports thrive and generate crowds in Stoke on Trent if we had an arena type building.
Ive watched a few ice hockey games and they generate great atmosphere and entertainment, or are we just a city of 2 football teams and little else.
I also used to regularly watch stoke speedway, and was gutted when it and closed and would love to see it return one day.

Also loved going to Loomer Road to watch Stoke Potters and BriSCA. F1 Stock Cars back in the 70s and 80s
Vision, the will to want to invest and make the city a viable alternative to cities up the road has to be there…..
The location of Stoke - literally in the middle of an hours drive to large populations of people make it , logistically speaking a good starting point.

He played basketball as well for s few teams as was involved with both sports in the USA. The ice hockey side looked possible for a while . I used to go and watch Telford and Manchester but the league was starting to die a bit and never happened. I like the idea still

Shame Staffordshire is not a first class cricket county.
Neighbouring Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire all are.

Where would the best place for an indoor sporting arena be?
How about that land near Tesco in Hanley?
Or near the Bet365 stadium?

It could be either the City centre like it was mooted in the sentinel about an indoor arena, but it should be by the bet365 to create a sport quarter. It could share the car parks. Sadly as with every idea for improving our City it will be lost forever in a myriad of bickering.

I was watching the Premier league final highlights, Peterborough vs Belle Vue. Some excellent racing on offer and big crowd too.

The original proposed venue was near to the ground, was one of those parachute style simulators there eventually. Like my ice hockey and was really hoping would come off. The Telford Tigers folded I think. I did go to see the Manchester Storm at the MEN as was over 20k there .

We both agreed that an indoor arena with a capacity of about 8k would be a brilliant idea. For starters Nathan Heaney could have his fights there as opposed to the Kings Hall which only holds about 1200 ? Also the area could then try to attract some decent musical acts to the area. As to its location…somewhere near the Bet365 makes sense due the the parking facilities and ease of access.

We could have Boules tournaments on the Bet 365 Car Park. In the Bois de Boulogne in Paris on a Sunday, players just seem to turn up and have a game wherever there's a piece of open flat ground.
European competition back at Stoke!

The problem is its the NHL i watch and the standard is different class. Saying that a sponsored ad break every 5 minutes does ruin it a bit. However thats a different matter. I suppose going to watch a game would be fun. Got a mate in gym who plays basketball problem again is. He said the standard of the BBL is know where near the NBA. Basically he was saying anyone half decent goes to play in the NBA.

Up the potters so gutted when it shut used to go every week 😥 Why did it close. The owners sold the stadium for development which still hasn't happened so that was it, not many if any oval sports circuits are owned by the promoters of speedway/stock cars all owned by private landlords.

Im sure i heard they cant build on it due to old mining works. If thats the case it even more gutting that it closed down.

There was rumours for years of a big mineshaft on the centre green but whether true i don't know, wouldn't stop them building though it is surrounded by distribution warehouses and it wouldn't stop them when all said and done the bet 365 is built over mineshafts on a type of raft foundations is it not?

I'm not sure what capacity it was but think it was bigger than The Victoria Hall and King's Hall. It closed after a couple of gigs. I saw Moby there, and I think it was Liberty X (?) who apparently turned up late for their gig that may also have been poorly attended, and the venue closed shortly after that.

I recall going to the Moby gig (with Lamb as the support act,) when buying the ticket I had to ask where the Lomax was as I'd never heard of it.Walking in my first impression was along the lines of: 'jesus, someone's thrown some money at this place...' It was a great space,I don't know if it was a failure of marketing/inability to attract decent acts or audiences that lead to is closure? A genuine shame that it didn't enjoy any longevity.

Nothing on The Sentinel website, but I have found this: www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/tears-plug-pulled-lomax-3553686Basically it was a Liverpool-based company that had an established venue in Liverpool and the new one in Stoke. They went into liquidation in 2003. What a shame and who knows what could have been, though maybe it was telling no one else took the Stoke venue on after all that effort for the refurbishment. I checked Google Street View, and the place looks a wreck now. I found this poster for the Moby gig too, and it seems they were expecting people to not know where the venue was: www.richardgoodallgallery.com/moby-211102-orange-11895-p.asp

As ever with these things around here the original developer went bump and it was finished off on a shoe string. Oh what could have been, walking to a venue like that instead of driving to Liverpool, Manchester, even Holmfirth or fucking Wolverhampton 😥😥😥

Manic Street Preachers, Wolf Alice and Paul Weller are three I'd usually expect to travel elsewhere. James played the Victoria Hall before the pandemic. And there are more big-name bands and comedians coming up (pandemic pending). I'm disappointed Nouvelle Vague were due to play The Sugarmill, but the post-pandemic tour has left it out. That's happened with a few bands. It doesn't help that there's no O2 venue, but I hate how O2 rip off bands/artists for everything they can, so I much prefer The Sugarmill etc. to stay independent.

I bought a house very close to the Speedway years ago , i fact you could hear it on A Saturday night. Was bought to renovate and flip. I paid cash for it but selling was a massive issue as buyers were denied mortgages due to mining reports etc.
