La Popote in Marton is pretty posh (and pricey). A few years ago I was taken there by a friend for a birthday treat. The food was excellent. While we were there a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce arrived and an elderly couple got out for a late Sunday lunch. I chatted them up and it turned out that they had some Stoke City connection (no, it wasn't the Coates'). They were enjoying their fine dining while the poor old chauffeur sat guarding the precious Rolls outside.

The sort of places where you leave feeling hungry and need to order a pizza when you get home

The quarter at potbank on spode is very good for Mexican food. I went for breakfast with the gang last week, everyone should try it, lovely place, nice set up. Not sure about the Mexican menu though in the evenings, I thought the Quarter at Hanley was ok evening wise but again much better for breakfast but not quite as good as North. Service is great in North too.

Lazy Trout, Meerbrook. Fabulous Also Aggie and Katy's Polish Restaurant in Burslem, excellent. Can't imagine Mr Sheen tasting all that nice to be fair?

Can’t vouch for The Tawny but Lunar @ world of Wedgwood I’ve been to. Michelin star chef with Potteries connections, interior impressive with local art and a huge (card? papier mache?) planet hanging from the ceiling. Food is exquisite as you’d expect but just not enough of it. Prices are above the average Stoke budget (including mine!) Easily £100 for two, I wrote this in a review which stated “either bigger portions or lower prices - preferably both! - are needed. The experience is quite theatrical (eg waitresses bring out your meal on wooden trays then waiters carefully place it in front of you) but I’m sure they could cut costs here and there in order to make it affordable for average Stoke incomes?

It's geographically smack in the middle of one of the wealthier areas of Stoke On Trent I would have though

Isn't that what you are paying for...the pretentiousness? I went to a Ninja restaurant in Tokyo (Akasaka). The entrance is a black door in a massive black facade with the smallest of signs etched into the facade. Knock on the door and a normal person answers and takes you through a warren of narrow alleyways to deep within the building and your own personal dining area which looks a bit like a jail cell/cave. You get to see the odd Ninja in the shadows. 8-9 courses - all somewhat pretentious. A miniature bonzai tree as a dessert. The stem and branches are like a churro. The brown soil at the base of the tree is grated chocolate. The earth beneath the soil was something else. The leaves of the bonzai tree was some sweet green tea tasting concoction. I had a vegetable soup which came in hard-boiled egg form. The broth was a transparent, jellied concoction that held all the vegetables in suspension. The whole thing looked like a foetus. Once you added a small amount of hot water the jelly dissolved and released the vegetables and all the flavours. There were a few fiery things and some magic stuff where food seemed to appear from nowhere. All good fun but, most importantly, the food was actually very good. I would go back again if I ever get to Tokyo in the future. It was about £70 p.p excluding alcohol - probably a bit more now that the £ has crashed against the Yen. I think £100 p.p. is my absolute limit for restaurant food. I am not sure there is anything more to be gained above that price. I might spend £150 for two people once every 2-3 years. It's not my normal choice. Plenty of decent restaurants where I am at £30 pp. I see that 5 out of the top 10 most expensive restaurants in the world are in Tokyo. Anything from £500-1300 per person. I think it is good that S-o-T can offer something a little bit different at the higher end. I hope they are a success. I remember an anecdote about the Box Tree? in Ilkey where someone phoned up to book a table for two. As part of the conversation they asked how much a typical meal for two might cost. They were a little taken aback when the voice on the other end said "Sir, if you are asking about the price, then you probably cannot afford to come". May be an urban myth but I can well imagine there are some restaurants with that attitude.

My own experience of dining in the area consists of two visits I arranged for former colleagues. (I do what I can to promote the area!). One was to the World of Wedgwood where we had a perfectly good lunch (meals pre ordered in the restaurant there). The other was to the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton. I arranged for a buffet lunch at the Glost |House which was perfectly o.k. We usually have tea and cake somewhere afterwards. The Museum cafe wanted us to pre order the teas and we had to be in before 3.30 because the cafe closed at 4.OO. However the Glost House said we could go there anyway even after 4.00 when they normally close and again they had a good selection (Private enterprise v. Council run facility). I am struggling to think of anywhere decent in Longton where visitors to the Museum could meet up for a decent lunch.

I went to Lunar the week it opened. Nice set-up in less than conventional surroundings but it is out of the way so zero passing trade. Expensive but prices are in line with fine dining restaurants but if that is the park they want to play in, they will need to take the food up a notch. It was ok, nothing more, and tastier food can be had for for a lot less if you are prepared to travel a little further (Manchester etc). I gave them the benefit of the doubt as it was early days so will go back at some point. I noticed that Niall quit his 2-star job at Whatley Manor a few weeks ago so maybe he will be more hands on at Lunar rather than an executive chef - hopefully it will improve.

Well I got to the Tawny at Consall on Wednesday and had a very nice meal. Fabulous place and setting I need to go back in the daylight. It's surely got to be up there with the very best places for weddings in the county.
