Wow.
Another reminder, if one were ever needed, of just how extraordinary Banksy was. He’d have been a multi millionaire today. When you see completely bang average players swanning around in gated communities, supping Cristal champagne etc., you know they would simply not be fit to lace his boots.

Thanks for bringing back the memory, Joe. Watched the highlights on TV without (amazingly) knowing the score. In those days we used lit beacons to communicate over distance. Watching it again now, still surprised when Banksy saves it. You’ve made my day!

Butland would have made that save look easy! Seriously, I was there and have a picture of the save on my living room wall. Banks reckoned that save was as good as the one from Pele. I still can't work out how any keeper has the strength in their hand/wrist to push low shots like that over the bar.

Went to the Old Trafford replay as a wide-eyed 14 year old. What a night.

I remember a bunch of us running along the platform at Euston as the train was waiting to leave. (they'd announced over the tannoy at Upton Park that it wouldn't be delayed). The guard was standing there with his flag in his hand and whistle to his lips. Some one on the train had put a picture of Banksie in the window and we all dropped to out knees bowing to it. The guard just shook his head and smiled. Great memories thanks to a great man. RIP Gordon.

I was there, in the "Irons" paddock, somehow. Hated Harry Redknapp for years as he went down so easily, never thought it was a penalty, but Gordon camr=e to the rescue. Great days

As I have mentioned I was 15 at the time, in the paddock with all West Ham supporters. I could not contain myself when Ritchie scored and when Banks’s made that save I was lucky to get out in one piece.
Always enjoyed the Boleyn ground.

One of the most humbling experiences of my life was talking with him and him going through the save moment by moment explaining how he did it. I was awestruck. Still am.

Watched that through the goal net from the opposite end. What a night apart from the unpleasant walk back to the underground station at full time 😬

Actually Butland's penno save in the shootout against Chelsea was very similar wasn't it. The thing I like about these clips is that they reinforce what a big deal that cup used to be.. look at the crowd, look at the WHU players who can't bear to watch the penalty, look at our players' elation when he saves it. Nowadays it would be easy to make the mistake of thinking our one major honour came from a bit of a second-tier competition, but really it meant just as much as the FA Cup (in itself also much more significant back then) to everyone concerned.

One of my greatest memories. To this day I don't think I've seen a better save than that one. Like John (Lakeland) says above, it was such a powerful shot that no keeper except our legendary Banksy could have palmed it over the bar. He had hands and wrists made of Kryptonite.
Thanks Joe.

The King sold his winners medal and international cap for the game for a little over £150k in 2001……..A weeks wages for many of today’s PL players.

It was an absolute thunderbolt of a penalty. As you say John it's amazing how he got it over the bar. You'd expect what's left of his wrist to end up in the back of the net with the ball.

When West Ham got that penalty I made my way out of the living room and stood by the door to watch it. I was expecting to go up to bed with a sulk on. Happy Days.

50 years ago today since this happened. Without being too harsh, didn't he give the pen away when caught dribbling the ball out ? Great great save though and from my second least person in football. Geoff Hurst.

My dad just said seeing that save was the proudest moment of his life. He worked as a quantity surveyor for Dave Atwood and the brickie there thought Stoke were going to lose so didn’t want to go so my dad went.
That night there was a party at Longton for Banks and Atwood, the construction company which Gordon Banks was affiliated with. My dad got to shake Gordon Banks’ hand and said thank you from all the Stoke fans.

Chunky Geordie guy, seemed to assume belching and pulling faces was amusing. Could have been a great player but just thought was an idiot despite some great moments.Baffled why dome love him but each to their own. Maybe he amused others .
