What about Colin Viljoen? 😊 Yep that’s a name I’d forgot about and McCall as well There was a player who didn’t take prisoners. Goes to show good teams need a balance.

Ipswich made up a good number of the Allies team in 'Escape to Victory' that great era. Paul Cooper also doubled up for Stallone and Beattie for Michael Caine. For some reason Kevin O'Callaghan played the original keeper. Laurie Sivell played the German keeper.

Yep that’s a name I’d forgot about and McCall as well I saw this show earlier, Ipswich at Birmingham team was Cooper, Burley, McCall, Thissen, Osman, Butcher, Wark, Muhren, Mariner, Brazil, O'Callaghan sub Turner. Gates was suspended after being sent off in a 5-3 loss at Spurs in the previous midweek, Mills, Club Captain then, was injured. They won 3-1 (Mariner, Wark, Brazil) Birmingham had a few good players on too, Curbishley, Todd, Gemmill, Givens, Worthington and our very own Keith Bertschin It was 80-81, a great season for Ipswich, finished second to Villa in the league, lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final and won the UEFA Cup against AZ Alkmaar, over two legs in those days. They were very close to winning the league. In April they played Villa in a title decider type game at Villa Park and won 2-1. Bobby Robson admitted years later they thought they'd won it and took their foot off the gas. Then it was hard to get going again because of fixture fatigue.

I'm amazed they haven't done better under him- his track record is very impressive.
Wrong job at the wrong time maybe? Not sure of the exact circumstances at Ipswich.

PNE if they cannot get Callum Davidson (St Johnstone manager and ex No. 2 to Rowett) then probably Paul Cook.

He did a brilliant job at Wigan My longstanding mate is a S/T holder at Wigan and would disagree totally with that view

I know a few like him but I’ve always thought he seemed an absolute dangler.

Where did the hype come from?
Can remember Wigan were on 20 points at Christmas (and they had a decent team) during the NJ-disaster/MON miracle worker season.
And has done shite at Ipswich with a big budget.

And some ppl wanted him here I was one of them. He did a remarkable job with Wigan despite their points deduction and budget limitations. I'm really surprised he failed at Ipswich, but as somebody said earlier the loss of a No. 2 can make a massive difference, especially where that Asst Mgr is the brains and tactician behind the leadership.

You'd want to see some of the names being proposed by their deluded fans who still believe that they can make it to the Championship next season. Lampard 3/1 for the job.

Paul Cook just needs to start hanging out in pubs. I heard somewhere that a few clubs pick their next managers based on a pub crawl. (Too soon?)
Yes, that joke's probably run its course, but I couldn't resist.
