Years ago.
You played the same team twice over a couple of days during the Xmas period.
You used to get some crazy results, one team may win 4-0,5-0,or 6-0. Then a day or to later lose by the same score, I remember this happening a lot during the 60s.

Last time we played on Christmas Day was 67 years ago when we beat Bury courtesy of a Johnny King (remember him?) hat trick.

Glad to. know that there are others on this Board who recall these bizarre occurrences! Up to 8 goals were sometimes scored by the home team.

I was there but don’t remember too much about it as I was only 11 at the time! Was spending Christmas with my grandparents who kept the French Horn up Hanley! I seem to recall that Roy Brown scored too - at the Boothen End I think. He was one of the very few black players at the time. On the subject of matches from long ago, who scored the other goal after Tim Coleman’s record for a winger versus Lincoln? d.

I was there and never missed a game, home and away that season. It was 1956/57 and we were doing well until the end of the season. We also beat Notts County 6-0 and Leyton Orient 7-1. Great times. OS.

You should always play your closest club on Boxing Day and New Years Day.

You should always play your closest club on Boxing Day and New Years Day. Agree, West Brom and Derby.

This Guardian article about Christmas games is interesting - I (just about) remember the crazy results in 1963, not least because one of my brothers supports Fulham: www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2011/dec/23/joy-of-six-christmas-football-matchesOur return game with Liverpool was obviously postponed because we beat them 3-1 at the end of April: www.worldfootball.net/teams/stoke-city/1964/3/

On Boxing Day Blackburn won 8-2 away then next day West Ham won the return fixture at Blackburn 3-1. Bizarre.

The West Ham v Blackburn games are mentioned in the first section of this article but there was an even bigger turnaround in the Fulham v Ipswich matches which is why, presumably, they got pride of place. An 8-2 away win is quire something, though!

My grandad said that a common fixture was Liverpool v Arsenal on Christmas Day and the return fixture on Boxing Day. Did they do charter trains to get the players from one fixture to the next? Obviously no motorways back then.

Midweek fixtures also should be v. your closest (geographically) teams. Do supporters’ groups ever bring up this sort of stuff at League meetings, seems obvious/common sense to most of us?

Sure non league still adopt this policy over the Christmas Period which does make sense. Have just checked a random nearby non league team and Telford Utd play Chester FC at home on Boxing Day & then away fixture is on 2nd January
