It’s completely passed me by until now that Ramsdale is from Stoke. Looks like the first professional side that picked him up was Sheffield United. So that’s Ramsdale, Ben Brereton (Diaz!), Jack Harrison and Mike Williamson (ex Newcastle United) that were local lads done good elsewhere. Any others we’ve missed out on? He is from Chesterton which is in Newcastle-under-lyme not Stoke

West Bromwich Albion selling Steve Bull to Wolves for £50k has to be the worst I’m pretty sure I remember seeing a documentary years ago that mentions us as having scouted Bull, and we didn’t take our interest any further. I know we did Collymore and he went to Southend. Think he went by the name Colly-Moore then or maybe that was when he was younger.something to do with dropping his Dad's name.

Not so locally born but on the subject of missing out on local scouted players who we disregarded but should of gambled on... David Platt at Crewe!!
Remember Mick Mills opting to stick with local lad Graham Shaw as he believed him to be a better option at the time! Doh!
Now don't get me wrong I did like Shawry back in the day (Liverpool miss aside!) but let's face it he was no David Platt! 62x England Caps & 27 International goals. Premier League Title win aswell as the FA Cup in a glittering career! Shaw did win the Second Division title with us in 1992 as a comparison of where Mick Mills scouting & talent spotting where back then 🤣

Danny Murphy the one we really let go I thought. We were constantly rumoured to be interested. Chester born I think. Not exactly local but was at Crewe. Platt's wife/girlfriend, Rachel I think called worked at Red Star parcels at Crewe Station. I think his rise as a player took so many by surprise to be fair so guess he was kind of localish although not born in The town himself

They really did feel like they'd unearthed a gem! Definitely true that at that time Platt was well & truely under the radar & certainly not someone who shone through as being a potential regular England midfielder.

I was oddly at that game when Platt scored v Belgium as my mate was a massive Villa fan and we were at the WC and tossing coins for England or Ireland games as tournament went on.

Belgium played really well but think Barnes had a goal disallowed that never was offside. We had a terrible view and players like ants in the distance. Think we got a train from Rimini. Was at Ireland v Romania a few days before think it was in Genoa. A couple of exciting finishes to both.

Poor old Shawry, always seemed to be mentioned in relation to Mills’s Platt comparison or the Liverpool miss (which wasnt as bad as many made out)!
I thought he was a cracking little player for us and was delighted when we re-signed h8m from Preston. Played a big role in that wonderful 92/93 season

Typical Ramsdale. A host of reaction saves he knows fuck all about then throws one in coz he was trying to make a simple save look spectacular.

Andy Thompson? Albion fans will say that sale stopped Wolves from going under

Comes from that cocky school of keepers, Hart, Pickford etc who like to get involved in everything and point aimlessly into the distance when they've made a good save and the camera is on them

Brian the exowner is a huge Crewe fan and used to be the matchday announcer Platt's gf , Rachel worked in Red Star parcels. She claimed that at no stage was Platt ever close to joining Stoke

True 😁 She dumped him then oddly came crawling back after the WC Kerching! Yep...she lived out Hough way. I don't think she could get to Italy quick enough when he moved there I used to have to collect a Red Star parcel every Friday from her, obviously was his personality she went for not the £££

I'm not saying we missed out on him as he's below our level at the moment but Josh Gordon who now plays for Burton Albion in league one is from Stoke and went to the same high school I went to (although I was gone before he started there). He spent time at Leicester, then moved to Walsall, then Barrow before finding himself at Burton so not a bad career really. Edit. Just read that we released him at sixteen.

I thought he was a cracking little player for us and was delighted when we re-signed h8m from Preston. Played a big role in that wonderful 92/93 season I used to see him quite often in the cells he went into law and was a solicitor then moved into teaching I think he's a maths teacher now. A bit hard done by over that miss.
