When did he say this mate? Really disappointing and worrying quote for me. Sounds more like something Nath would have said towards the end of his tenure when he was conducting interviews from a dark corner of the equipment shed, sat in a creaky old rocking chair, stroking his League One Manager of the Month award and intermittently whispering the word 'diamonds'. "I think you defend by keeping the ball now. The days of having a midfield player who just breaks the play up are probably no longer a significant part of the game." www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-hull-defensive-midfielder-5967508Kante, Fabinho, Fernandinho, Rice, Phillips, Hojberg are the best midfielders in the Prem, and breaking up play is very much a significant part of their game. All those players you mention don't just break up play, they have other strings to their bow as well.......

But why can't we someone to do both? Passing and breaking up play. In this division you need midfield guys who can get about physically and win a few 50 50s, particularly away from home.

Last summer every Stoke fan was saying we need a ball winning defensive midfielder. But Michael O'Neil didn't. So nothing happened. It's now the end of November and our midfield is either too slow, injured, knackered or in the case of Sam Fucking Clucas, all three.

Blokes a absolute fraud. Does naff all when we don't have the ball.and when he does get it it's either given away or backwards. Genuinely think I'd rather have Ryan Woods in our side than him.

It really doesn't appear MoN has a clear plan for a properly functioning midfield and that has been the case since last season. His blindspot over this is both puzzling and concerning. It's hard to see what he's thinking and I'm beginning to wonder if he even really knows himself?

The lack of a hard as nails, brick shit house midfielder was highlighted at the start of the season yet some thought it wasn’t necessary. It’s as clear as day one is needed.

Both have a very similar tendency to shirk responsibility and play the ball to players of alleged inferior ability on the ball. Woods repeatedly gave the ball back to his centre halves instead of taking responsibility for finding a positive ball. Sawyers deferred to the ability of Wilmot in a promising attacking position on a couple of occasions today which I thought was telling for someone of his supposed ability on the ball.

I'd say Thompson is of that mold but we really need a few midfield tough players in and a few lingering ones out in Jan and the Summer.

It’s not even that we need a big hard man in the middle, we need some energy in there. Time and time again you can run through our midfield & we just haven’t got the athleticism to deal with it.

Who was the Wigan CM that ran the show against us a couple of seasons back? I remember Liam Lawrence raving about him being just the type we should be after.

Fabian Delph on loan in January, tackles, passes has a real presence if we’re serious about progressing

This. We have no dynamism in centre mid. No energy at all. No one wants to make a tackle. The atmosphere was shite today but it’s players running out of their skin for the team that gets the fans going. O’Neil talks about getting young energetic players into the team but has forgotten about doing it in the middle of the park

He's actually at Ipswich so maybe that was a stand out performance against us seeing as now plying his trade in League one. Obviously Cook knows him from Wigan. The likes of him and Pearson are lambasted on here when we play them. They are exactly the types we need . A horrible foot in , in yer face spoiler.
