Both are/were only a problem because of how they were/are being used tbf to them. Sawyers definitely, though it would have been nice if Mikel could’ve bothered doing some off the ball stuff here and there. He didn’t play as the DM we needed. Mikel just got over played really, I liked him and thought he was a useful player but understandably faded badly.

I agree but I don't think he should have been the one asked to do it, just not mobile enough any more.

Let's face it MON doesn't want that type of player, the proof being Cousins. He let him go despite being the best at that actual job description and still is. And that isn't meant to start a side conversation on the value Cousins offered. We should have been looking for a upgrade but never tried.

We could sign Tommy Toughtodger from Strangeways FC tomorrow and the problem will just become:
'Why are we playing Tommy Toughtodger at home?' or 'ffs how many free kicks does Tommy Toughtodger give away?'
To be honest I'm not sure when physicality ceased to be a pre requisite of a decent midfielder regardless of them playing 6, 8, 10 or fucking 8 and 3/4.

Why as that is where he has played for most of his short career I don’t think it is. He’s played there about three times in his career hasn’t he? He played there for Stevenage And all of 2018-19 season for Watford and while on loan to udinese

We need a competent Goalkeeper and a decent group of defenders first but, a defensive midfielder is obviously also required. We always look capable of scoring but sadly never look like keeping a clean sheet these days. So basically a new starting XI then ?

No, a competent Goalkeeper,a left sided defender and a defensive midfielder. That's 3 in my book!

He’s played the vast majority of his career as a centre back.

This DM is like buying jeans. MON really needs a new pair, but shopping for jeans is boring. So instead, he chose to buy some fancy shirts (Vrančić, Sawyers, Surridge et al...) Yeah he's got new clobber now, but he still has the same old holey jeans which keep falling down.

If at Spurs the new manager comes in and drops Oliver Skipp the that’s who I think we should try to get in on loan. Very promising and tenacious defensive mid.

Maybe Billy Gilmour is an option as his loan to Norwich doesn’t seem to be working out for some reason.

Gilmour and skipp? What are you 2 smoking? Not a chance we’d get that sort of player,

Gilmour and skipp? What are you 2 smoking? Not a chance we’d get that sort of player, It’s dreaming but Conte might not rate him, might drop him, and he was on loan at a Champo club last season so it’s not impossible if perhaps unlikely.

He’s played the vast majority of his career as a centre back. It's a risk trying out Wilmot as a DM - I'm not sure he has the positional discipline to do so. We know he likes to break away on his mazy runs. If he does, he'd leave the back line exposed. I'd feel more comfortable if he was part of a double DM partnership - one going in with the hard tackles and interceptions, with Wilmot in the 'false DM' role allowing him to get forward when required.

Why do people keep suggesting Wilmot to play defensive mid? His passing is awful and careless at times imagine it when playing fifteen yards further forward…

MON said a few weeks ago something along the lines of tackling isn’t that important for modern day midfielders. That’s an unbelievably naive, bizarre, wrong thing to say. Last night we got overrun in midfield first half because none of ours CM’s are quick enough or strong enough to make a tackle.

They offered zero protection again to the back 3. Way too many times the opposition gets to run one on one at a centre back.

I don’t think we were overrun in midfield, they were certainly sharper to the ball for a period of time first half but their only real chances came from balls over the shoulder of Batth. And we certainly gained control of most of the second half but again that involved us going more direct.…….

Really disappointing and worrying quote for me. Sounds more like something Nath would have said towards the end of his tenure when he was conducting interviews from a dark corner of the equipment shed, sat in a creaky old rocking chair, stroking his League One Manager of the Month award and intermittently whispering the word 'diamonds'.

We should’ve given Jordan Cousins another year. He’s not a midfield general in the sense that he’ll dictate the tempo of the game but he’s robust physical player in a way that none of our other midfield options are and would be well suited to some matches.

"I think you defend by keeping the ball now. The days of having a midfield player who just breaks the play up are probably no longer a significant part of the game." www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-hull-defensive-midfielder-5967508Kante, Fabinho, Fernandinho, Rice, Phillips, Hojberg are the best midfielders in the Prem, and breaking up play is very much a significant part of their game.

'Just breaks up play'????? Why can't a DM break up play and create? A worrying comment.

We’re two centre mids off being a very good team. Even one would drastically improve us. Just not enough running in an Allen-Sawyers pairing. Hard to see how we’ll be able to leave Thompson out any time soon as we need his running.
