A Geordie friend of mine just told me he'd been offered and signed a new 3 year deal at he same wage he's already in - reportedly £55k a week even though he'd only played 20 minutes of football this season and very little last season. He (my friend) is always telling me how badly the club is run and that Ashley prefers to offer new contracts to existing players rather than spend any money on new players. Ashley is trying to sell the club but wants twice as much as it's been valued at. A pity about Gayle though as he was a terrific championship striker (59 goals in 3 championship seasons)and still could have been but who would be willing to take him on the wages he's earning by sitting on Newcastle's bench at best. Would have liked him here and could have possibly would have gained us a few more points than we already have. Gouranga.

31 in a couple of weeks as well, I thought it was only Stoke who offered ridiculous contracts to players that are not playing! Gouranga.

The way Newcastle are heading he might get some games next season It could well be the opposite. The Saudis could buy their way out of trouble this season with some expensive Jan signings. Then if they stay up I can see Gayle and other fringe players cut loose before next season

Price you pay for a proven goal scorer Can he still do it though? Limited game time in the last couple of years... Also, is he the type of striker we need? Isn't he another shoulder of the last defender type, when we could do with an alternative to Fletcher who can hold the ball up and win it in the air?

We will definitely sign him, but it will happen exactly 2 seasons after he stops being useful at Championship level. I dont think we’re quite there yet.

He's not the profile of player we are looking at and as you say his game relies on pace, which goes first, rather than guile, which sticks around, so I'd be very surprised to see this happen.
