Danny Baker tweeted this yesterday saying how did your team get on.. I scanned over the results (in various divisions, didn't know the year) and realised we were one of the only teams not in action.. but then look at the table. One point off the top with three games to play. Breaks your heart!

Ah the days of proper football ! Look how much the top tables are dominated by the Midlands and the North. All the Johnny come lately southerners (Watford, Palace, Norwich etc etc) are where they belong 🙂

I suspect selling Sir Stan to Blackpool on that day did not help the run in.
Imagine the support for the management if t'Oatcake was around then . . . . . .

Exactly. 10th May 1947 is one of the truly awful days in our club’s history! Right up there with the day (whenever it was) in the summer of 1983 when Richie Barker went on a training course!

Not to mention 3rd September 1939, when Britain declared war on Nazi Germany, robbing us of prime Matthews and Steele. I think some other stuff happened in the intervening years, too.

I just looked at the old first division table. Stoke in second place and we almost did it. I also realised that Brentford where also in the same league as us. I never knew that they had been in the old first division before this season. Brentford FC punching above their weight since 1947 at least. Grimsby also in there with Englands finest. How fortunes have changed for certain clubs makes this very interesting reading.

Just nice to see how the papers used to print the results and tables back in the day. With the way TV, mobile devices & Internet works these days it isn't usual to see it set out like it always used to be. Remember spending ages on a Sunday studying the tables & results & all the what ifs and maybes that went with it. Can't remember the last time I saw the results and tables in printed press!

I thought I read somewhere that Matthews was injured for the run-in so selling him to Blackpool three games before the end of the season wouldn't have made a great deal of difference, but I may be mistaken? It's still galling that we missed out. Just once as English champions would be fine. Just once.

Wasn't it a very bad winter, so we didn't play our last game v Sheff Utd, long after the season should have finished?

Slightly before my time, born in 1970. Still it reminds me of studying the Sunday or Monday paper for the results round up. I used to read every result and study all four league tables and the top scorers for each league. Now days the score is sent to my phone and don't buy newspapers anymore. And I stream the match..
I don't often look at the other leagues anymore.
How times have changed..
