My best mate is Scottish and he's always the first to the bar to get drinks in. I still call him a tight miserly jock though. So yeah to a great extent I certainly do thing we are all becoming over sensitive. It will have consequences. About 15+ years ago the York City fans used to sing “ Tight Scottish b*****d, you’re just a tight Scottish b*****d” at owner Douglas Craig . He complained to the police and football authorities that he was the victim of racist abuse. He was right, although I cannot bring myself to think of Craig as a victim in any sense. He was a truly appalling owner. He separated ownership of the club from ownership of the ground, sold the club for £1 and then gave it notice to quit Bootham Crescent, a very valuable piece of real estate close to York City centre. He actually said it was pay back time for all the abuse the fans had given him. The Club only survived by the Football Foundation lending it the money to buy him out, to be repaid by selling BC and moving to a new ground . It’s taken 16 years for that to become a reality this season. The new ground is at a retail park out on the ring road - sadly not as good as BC walking distance from the station and York’s dozens of excellent pubs. Craig trousered a fortune from his spiv behaviour and the club is still suffering the consequences. Getting even father away from the original point, the housing developers are really sensitive to the history and heritage of BC. Apart from the roads all being named after players ( like the Vic site), they are preserving part of the popular stand which has a tunnel underneath which was used as a wartime air raid shelter. It was also used by fans to change ends at half time and after choice of ends at start of game. Sadly that practice ended with the rise of football hooliganism ( police and stewards worst nightmare- opposing fans walking in opposite directions in a small tunnel ! ) They are also senstivlely digging up urns of ashes of fans which were buried in BC, putting them in caskets made from the wood of main stand seats and reinterring them in a memorial garden in the new development. The whole thing could almost become York’s newest tourist attraction ! An irrelevant aside but I thought you might be interested. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Interesting story. I just have to disagree that calling a Scot stingy or tight is actually racist (are they even a different race?) when used in a comedic light-hearted sense. Screaming it and accompanying it with abusive language from a football terrace then yes I can see your point. But are we really saying York City nearly folded because of racism? Not just the abuse he was getting in general owing to him being a complete Spiv. I just personally think we are treading a perilous path if we are looking to change or indeed stop something as simple as silly jokes between home nations in some quest for social purity. Where is the line drawn and who determines it? Who has the right to insist we do this if not everyone agrees? Are we suggesting it is dealt with by acts of parliament? That seems like compulsion of speech onto many people who do not want it. Seems rather authoritarian and unnecessary in my eyes. Not sure what happens when I quote you Malcolm but it goes all over the shop. Anyway to be clear I want women to be as comfortable as anyone else when attending football matches. I would be appalled to hear derogatory things chanted towards them and back in the day I never joined in with the few fools who chanted things at the half time ticket girl. The world has most certainly moved on from that. I'm keeping my daft jokes though and people are free to send daft jokes at my expense my way, no problem. EDIT Malcolm did not say the quote in the box at the top!!!!!!! I did.[/quote] Some people have difficulty differentiating between tongue in cheek banter and sexist abuse mate. Quite why is a complete mystery🤷🏻♂️

I actually prefer to watch women's footie at the moment.
You can chat with all fans home and away, players chat with you, and you can stand up, and have a drink while watching.
The game itself is way more entertaining and played with more passion - contact is allowed, no diving like the ponces that play the male version.
I rarely go to watch the mens game these days, but my daughters bought me a ticket to a game for a birthday present and came along with me, I have never wanted to take them because of the trouble in the men's game: As we walked up the hill to the ground across the bridge and on to the main car park a car flew straight towards us trying to knock us over, some Vale fans got out of the car and were looking for a fight(this was at the Brit), I think as I was with girls they walked past us and we managed to escape but our hearts were pounding, during the game my daughters heard Stokies singing Delilah and wanted to know what the words were - I had to make up something.
The atmosphere was crap in the ground, the players were passionless and we lost - Shite experience and would never take them again - that said, they said they did like the overall experience and atmosphere and said they would go again.

I like women everywhere - all over the place. But one quick way to run them all off is to start making stupid sexist comments and not keeping your hands to yourself. Learn how to act ffs.

Apologies Malcolm Haha poor Malc Incidentally, it was all Malcolm's own doing.. he managed to omit a bit of code on 11th September when quoting mickeythemaestro, making it look like it was himself speaking rather than mickey: And if people think we are going to get to a stage where no "offensive" jokes are made in the world then they are completely mad. And to be fair what a fucking miserable world it would be. They will be cancelling Chubby brown next [/ quote] It’s quite possible to make jokes, enjoy humour and have a good laugh without upsetting or offending anyone, isn’t it Mickey ? And then there was a domino effect of misattributed quotes in posts after that because of that error

The quoting is a bit dodgy on this thread, can’t work out who’s saying what🤔 I thought Malcolm had used the f word for a moment! No chance ( well not in public anyway ) It's a bit odd that this thread has resurfaced after 15 months. I'd forgotten all about it. But if my technological incompetence has caused me problems, there's nothing new about that

Genuine question. What do Surveys like this hope to achieve? I wouldn’t normally delve into such debates as you are likely to be unfairly engulfed by a lefty tsunami. I believe most Women, similar to their Male counterparts, Historically attend Men’s football matches because of the embedded Masculine element and Fierce Tribal agenda. To begin a headlong Feminisation and overly liberal metamorphosis of our beloved sport (Which we are undoubtedly already in the midst of) is probably the beginning of the end of a uniquely masculine pastime. I want Women to enjoy their Men’s football. I also want Men to enjoy Women’s Football. Do not confuse these two very different spectator sports and certainly never impose the wishes of the minority on the Majority.

Even I as a woman used to accept the "What do you know about offside, you're a woman?" as somehow justified. Now I realise that I know as much about the offside law as any man and as my husband will tell you probably understand the current rule better than him. I also used to accept that comments of a sexual nature as something I had to put up with if I wanted to go to a football match and drunken behaviour too. Now I know none of those are acceptable and I don't have to put up with anything which makes me feel uncomfortable. I have some problem with your assumption that men and women watch football for the masculine elements. I enjoy watching a team try to out play the opposition and while I do find some handbags a bit of a laugh it is certainly not the physical side I go to watch and hate players who deliberately go out to hurt someone.

Do not confuse these two very different spectator sports and certainly never impose the wishes of the minority on the Majority. I'm not entirely convinced that it is a genuine question, given the rest of the post, but I think it does what it says on the tin - try to find out the views and experiences of women who attend football; This will inform discussions about promoting the game to women and dealing with any problems and issue they might encounter. Since the thread started, the results have been published. thefsa.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Women-at-the-Match-report.pdfI don't agree with you that mens and womens football should be regarded as "two very different spectator sports". I don't believe that discussion about this will result in you being "unfairly engulfed by a lefty tsunami" (the discussion is not one of 'left' and 'right') or that watching Stoke City and other men's teams is "a uniquely masculine pastime" or that we are in the midst of "a headlong Feminisation and overly liberal metamorphosis of our beloved sport" (whatever that is supposed to mean in practice).

In answer to your genuine question - I think these surveys are intended to challenge people who believe football is a "Man's" sport. Looks like it's working.

I have watched football for a long time, I have had a season ticket for many years and love going away when time and money allow. I go because I have always enjoyed the rivalry, the tribalism the whole chanting and being with like minded people and forgetting my weeks stresses and taking it out on different players from the safety of the stand. My point is that when I am in the crowd and see a female/ child I automatically alter my language and behaviour as I feel it not appropriate but question if this is correct? Is my match day experience under pressure? After 30 + years am I not want the clubs want and on the flip side is this the way I want to watch football? I sit next to a lady at the match who I guess is around late 30's she is well informed has a season ticket like me is good fun and yet I still cringe when the motor mouths near us have their terretź moments.
Maybe it's time to go to lower league and let the ladies have a more pleasant experience?
