The closest that I'd ever let my lady get to the match is dropping me off and picking me up. Even then I need to have had a drink before I get in the car!!!!!

I am obsessed with footy and Stoke, that much so my girlfriend has just left me because of it.
Was a shame as we had been going out for 3 seasons.
I would love a little Stoke chick to go to the game with - how cool would it be to have a woman that liked football and not only that supported the club that invented the game and the club that I support. At the game, I fall in love with every woman in a Stoke top - takes balls to support the Potters(but not literally of course) and character, and who does not like a woman with balls.
The more the merrier I say

I thought Malcolm had used the f word for a moment! Sorry the profanity was me not Malcolm. I haven't yet got the hang of this new sanitised world order. All the atrocities occurring daily across the world and we in Britain are fighting over bloody edgy jokes. Heard the one about the police officer up for a disciplinary because he joked he better start eating curry for a long life after hearing an Indian gentleman had lived to 105. When will the madness stop :-/ It really shouldn’t be up to the person telling the offensive joke to decide who should and shouldn’t be offended by what, though.

When you've worked out the relevant tables for what the rules are for everyone on planet earth as to what can be said, when and to whom then give me a shout. In the meantime I will continue to just get on with life and have a bit of resilience to anything I perceive to be a bit offensive and get on with my day. And btw there are women being murdered over in Kabul as we speak. I bet they'd rather be listening to my crappy women jokes.

Don’t be a Dick. How offensive (rofl) Do you actually think these things through? What type of society do you produce when you tell a whole generation they have the right to never be offended? It's a cruel world out there, buckle up sweet cheeks :-* Yes, I do think these things through and I had a good idea you’d go for the obvious ‘offensive’ retort. My point being, some will be offended by that, more would be offended if I suggested not being something involving a racist, sexist, ageist, etc slur. And talking of thinking things through, I’m not suggesting telling people not to be offended, I’m suggesting not being offensive in the first place. So thank you for your advice, but I spent a lot of time being offended and ‘buckling up’. Do you think that helped? Absolutely not, because regardless of how thick your skin is, eventually things hurt and can leave lasting mental scars. You’ll probably choose to believe I’m just a woke snowflake generation wallflower- you know nothing about me, but crack on.

I'm certainly not bringing my kids up to be appalled if someone makes an "offensive" joke at their expense, they need to learn to take them and retort as necessary. The world has far worse in store for them and the sooner they get used to it the better as far as I am concerned.

If someone can't take a light-hearted edgy joke then the problem is theirs not mine. They will have a difficult life unfortunately. Edit; And the funny thing is they are on here like knights in shining armour speaking and standing up for all women like the real heroes they think they are yet failing to see the irony in that not all women agree with them or want their virtue signalling.

I've screwed up my attempt to link to the Twitter thread but a woman in the away support today has appealed for help from HTAFC because she was subject to sexist abusive comments from another Huddersfield supporter, and she's ended up wishing that she never went to the game. Humourous? Edgy? Jokey? Edit: it's referenced at downatthemac.proboards.com/thread/116240/stoke-city-matchday-thread?page=11She's just another fan but she's had her day ruined by some dinosaur. Hope the guy gets a ban.

I say far more offensive stuff to the gf than I'd post because we'd know we'd be joking around. Randoms could read comments as genuine hostility or disrespect and quite rightly think "fuck that group I'm not going the game if they're like that". I hope more people come to agree with me on that.

And if people think we are going to get to a stage where no "offensive" jokes are made in the world then they are completely mad. And to be fair what a fucking miserable world it would be. They will be cancelling Chubby brown next It’s quite possible to make jokes, enjoy humour and have a good laugh without upsetting or offending anyone, isn’t it Mickey ? Of course it is Malcolm. Material will get very thin on the ground though. And it all depends on what we define as offensive. A female poking fun at me about my mansplaining or manspreading isn't going to bother me for example. The problem you have today is some people are hyper sensitive and take offence at anything. And even worse you have people who are hyper sensitive and take offence on other peoples behalf. Good luck trying to sanitise the world so nobody ever gets offended. Thankfully you won't succeed.
I can remember when shows like Till Death us do part which had “jokes”based on racist stereotypes were defended on similar grounds - “ it’s only banter”, “ don’t be hyper-sensitive” etc etc. Fortunately such shows wouldn’t be made or tolerated today. In my younger days I laughed at and also told the occasional “Irish joke” based on an absurd stereotype which could upset Irish people. I wouldn’t do it now. it’s not about trying to sanitise the world but is about avoiding stereotypes which those on the receiving end understandably find offensive. Sexist comments and behaviour come into same category and I think will eventually be seen in the same light. In the meantime if in a football context they deter women from going to games and getting involved then we all suffer the consequences. I think the important thing to teach kids is not that it’s an unpleasant world and if someone offends you take it on the chin and give it back, as you suggest, but rather if you know or think something you say will offend someone because it’s based on a stereotype, just don’t say it. And the appalling plight of women in Afghanistan doesn’t in any way detract from that in my view.

I disagree in the sense that I think everything is going too far when daft jokes are being put out there as being something abhorrent and that the person telling them must suddenly be some kind of deviant who needs separating from decent society They are jokes. And I am not talking about groups of lads chanting derogatory things at females in public places. That is clearly wrong and intimidating and is condemned quite rightly. Personally I believe if we carry on the way we are going we are going to create a grid lock, with people living in fear of saying something that will cost them a job or their standing in society on one side and a culture of permanently offended people creating havoc in HR departments and courts up and down the land. My parents and all my grandparents are/were Irish and I love a good Irish joke. It's just a daft joke. Ireland has produced many of the worlds finest writers, my dad was a doctor. I know they aren't stupid. My best mate is Scottish and he's always the first to the bar to get drinks in. I still call him a tight miserly jock though. So yeah to a great extent I certainly do thing we are all becoming over sensitive. It will have consequences.

Interesting. Doesn't change my opinion though. It's a bloody mean old world out there full of threatening and uncomfortable circumstances and if people are going to struggle with a few "offensive" jokes then they are going to struggle big time when they realise the world is a harsh place. And if people think we are going to get to a stage where no "offensive" jokes are made in the world then they are completely mad. And to be fair what a fucking miserable world it would be. They will be cancelling Chubby brown next But that’s crap isn’t it? For the vast majority of people in England, it’s not a mean old world, is it? People get up, live a comfortable day, go to bed and repeat. This “it’s a mean old world” doesn’t really wash. While it’s true, it’s not the life that most people live. Offensive jokes don’t train people for the trials and tribulations to come, if a person never really has any. The average person has to deal with family loss or debt; I don’t see how jokes will guide them through those times to be honest. I don’t really see the hardship in just trying to think before you speak. I’m sure that I say a lot of things that may upset others, but for the most part I learn my audience and I’m fine. If I ever actually offend someone I genuinely feel bad, because who needs that in their day? And why would I want to deliver that to them? How is it really not just an extension of not swearing in front of your grandparents etc? It’s not that hard.

My best mate is Scottish and he's always the first to the bar to get drinks in. I still call him a tight miserly jock though. So yeah to a great extent I certainly do thing we are all becoming over sensitive. It will have consequences.
About 15+ years ago the York City fans used to sing “ Tight Scottish b*****d, you’re just a tight Scottish b*****d” at owner Douglas Craig . He complained to the police and football authorities that he was the victim of racist abuse. He was right, although I cannot bring myself to think of Craig as a victim in any sense. He was a truly appalling owner.
He separated ownership of the club from ownership of the ground, sold the club for £1 and then gave it notice to quit Bootham Crescent, a very valuable piece of real estate close to York City centre. He actually said it was pay back time for all the abuse the fans had given him.
The Club only survived by the Football Foundation lending it the money to buy him out, to be repaid by selling BC and moving to a new ground . It’s taken 16 years for that to become a reality this season. The new ground is at a retail park out on the ring road - sadly not as good as BC walking distance from the station and York’s dozens of excellent pubs. Craig trousered a fortune from his spiv behaviour and the club is still suffering the consequences.
Getting even father away from the original point, the housing developers are really sensitive to the history and heritage of BC. Apart from the roads all being named after players ( like the Vic site), they are preserving part of the popular stand which has a tunnel underneath which was used as a wartime air raid shelter. It was also used by fans to change ends at half time and after choice of ends at start of game. Sadly that practice ended with the rise of football hooliganism ( police and stewards worst nightmare- opposing fans walking in opposite directions in a small tunnel ! )
They are also senstivlely digging up urns of ashes of fans which were buried in BC, putting them in caskets made from the wood of main stand seats and reinterring them in a memorial garden in the new development. The whole thing could almost become York’s newest tourist attraction ! An irrelevant aside but I thought you might be interested.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Interesting story. I just have to disagree that calling a Scot stingy or tight is actually racist (are they even a different race?) when used in a comedic light-hearted sense. Screaming it and accompanying it with abusive language from a football terrace then yes I can see your point. But are we really saying York City nearly folded because of racism? Not just the abuse he was getting in general owing to him being a complete Spiv. I just personally think we are treading a perilous path if we are looking to change or indeed stop something as simple as silly jokes between home nations in some quest for social purity. Where is the line drawn and who determines it? Who has the right to insist we do this if not everyone agrees? Are we suggesting it is dealt with by acts of parliament? That seems like compulsion of speech onto many people who do not want it. Seems rather authoritarian and unnecessary in my eyes. Not sure what happens when I quote you Malcolm but it goes all over the shop. Anyway to be clear I want women to be as comfortable as anyone else when attending football matches. I would be appalled to hear derogatory things chanted towards them and back in the day I never joined in with the few fools who chanted things at the half time ticket girl. The world has most certainly moved on from that. I'm keeping my daft jokes though and people are free to send daft jokes at my expense my way, no problem. EDIT Malcolm did not say the quote in the box at the top!!!!!!! I did.
