So trying to cut down and got one of them a spray things. Got from my usual 12 odd a day to 8 today, doesn’t sound like progress but I can’t remember the last time I had less than 10.
Just wanted peoples stories really. I know I’m meant to say I’m doing it for the health reasons and such, but to tell you the truth it’s over £10 a pack and it’s an absolute drainer
To anyone else having a go I wish you well and feel free to use this thread for support

Last cigarette I had was back in '92. It took me a few tries, but I finally figured it out. Just stop--cold turkey as they say. But you really have to WANT to quit. Cutting back is really just not wanting to quit. You'll know when you really want to quit...and then you will.

I started smoking in my teens and then struggled trying to kick the habit in my late teens / early 20s. Also smoked a lot of weed back then (which is what started the smoking rather than the other way round) but kicked that around 20 because I was literally going insane. Nicotine addiction is a bitch though and I still have it in my early 30s, but haven't smoked for a long time. Mostly been using e-cigs during that time. Tried to quit e-cigs many times, mostly using nicotinell lozenges. I had some periods of 6 months+ without vaping, but the main problem for me is when I have sessions with my mates. That's when the lozenges just won't do, so I had a few times where I'd go and buy a cheap e-cig from tesco for the sole purpose of using it when partying, but the problem for me has always been the next few days when I'm hungover and not at my most disciplined, and there's still vape about. Quite a few times I've ended up vaping for a few days and saying "this is the last day" but finding myself unable to get back on the lozenges, and then I would just say fuck it and bulk purchase supplies for my heavy duty e-cig because I was spending so much per day on the shite from tesco.
However, I was advised to try snuss pouches by a mate of mine and I've been on them for a while now and feel like I've finally left the e-cigs behind for good. They're just little pouches of flavoured powder that you put underneath your lip. They originated in scandanavia I believe. I've tried quite a few brands but Nordic Spirit is the best IMO, which they sell in tesco. The difference between these and the lozenges is that I can use these whilst partying and it's not at all unpleasant, so I don't end up gasping for the e-cigs. Obviously I'm aware that I'm just replacing addiction for addiction and not offering a solution to overcoming nicotine addiction entirely, but as I haven't been able to do that for the entirety of my adult life then I'm not in a position to offer advice.
I'd suggest going into tesco and buying a box of nordic spirit pouches. There's 20 per box and different strengths, and each pouch lasts roughly an hour. You'd probably get through 20 in 2-3 days. If smoking around 10 a day I'd recommend going for the 3rd highest strength of the 4 strengths, but maybe the 2nd highest would do the trick. It's a weird sensation at first but you get used to it. If you try it and it helps then go online and bulk order as you'll get them cheaper than buying from the local shops.

I don’t feel I’m really qualified to comment on this discussion as I don’t smoke but here goes. I’ve never smoked cigarettes in my 57 years but I do have the occasional cigar at Xmas (and a box of matches to keep relighting it lol). However my son…26 years old…smokes. He started when he was about 16 I think when he was hanging around with smokers at school…neither me or his mum smoke and none of our immediate family smoke either…even the lads I go to the match with don’t smoke so he had to have picked up the habit from his school mates. My lad has tried to pack it in but seems unable to at present. At over £10 a pack it is a habit I know he wants to kick as he and his girlfriend want to buy a house but cigarettes are a big expense when trying to save. I’m sure he will pack it in one day as he really wants to kick the habit but as you say it’s an addiction…just wish I could help him more really.

I gave up cigarettes about 6 years ago with the vaping boom. I still vape unfortunately but have gone from the strongest possibly nicotine liquid to the weakest. Still can’t kick the vape habit though. And I do still feel like a bit of a leper when out. Everyone I know who has done this has ended up going back to full time smoking within weeks so not convince at all that vaping is an effective way of stopping. I like the powder idea above, never heard of it so will give this a try I think. Best of luck Bathheader theres thousands of us👍🏻

The only advantage of vaping over smoking, and it’s a big one. I was spending £300!!! a month on cigarettes but spend around £80 a month on vaping after the initial £60 outlay on a device which will last in excess of 12 months if looked after. Also you don’t stink of smoke😉

Wish I never started...much like nearly every smoker out there probably.
Tried to stop and have used
Champix - from the doctor on prescription. I ended up having mood swings and had a temper like CHarles Manson. Stopped with this A nicorette spray Nico Plasters Chewing gum E-ciggys but got a chronic sore throat with this so stopped Vapoured but got the same symptoms. Cold turkey a number of times but start arguing after a few days with the lady which isnt fair and isnt her fault
Fags have gone over here on 1 August to €7.20 for a pack of 20 - about GBP6,50 off the top off me head
Ive got a spine like a jellyfish and find it incredibly hard.

Not a huge addiction for me (I don’t think I have that much of an addictive personality, plus I wasn’t a long time smoker)
Smoked for about 6-12 months in high school, only started on cigarettes as I was smoking weed prior to that. Girlfriend and College came and I dropped them fully with no vapes, plasters, gum or hypnotism.
I think its only as easy as your personality and time in the game allows. I know my dad for one could drop smoking at the click of a finger, he’s significantly cut down over the years, but just likes the 5 minutes alone time he gets when stepping outside.
As long as you’re doing it for yourself and no one else, but have that great support group around you, I’m sure you’ll be into less than 5 a day in no time, then eventually abolished completely.

The problem is you want to keep smoking more than you want to stop smoking. I speak from experience I “gave up” once but went back. I then stopped and never went back. The difference was that second time I actually wanted to stop. I’d had enough of the stupidity that is smoking. Bottom line is it is down to you. Which is quite self empowering when you think about it. JFDI.

Anything's worth a try, so at the least try doing sth like making smoking more inconvenient for yourself to do & leave your packet in the boot of the car, or in a plastic bag down at the bottom of the garden, & your lighter in another place in the garden, ie. somewhere that makes it more difficult for you to get at them rather than just easily reaching into your pocket and having them immediately to hand. I know that would be a really minor way to start, but it might begin to make a bit of a difference & then make you feel able to tackle other ways of gradually cutting down more and more until you think you can give them up completely. Best of luck with your efforts.

This was 4 years ago, ie. it will be 4 years this coming November - it might have been sth like the 23rd - I think you often find that ex-smokers can quote the exact day they stopped - maybe because they know that to stop is one hell of an achievement. Amazingly I've never had any cravings to speak of. Must confess I loved smoking & was quite dedicated to it, particularly when doing paperwork and having to concentrate, and the financial angle of smoking never came into it - I just knew that health-wise it wasn't a very good thing to do, and in fact every time I put a ciggie out, and I mean every time over 40 years, I thought 'I shouldn't really be doing this'. I think the most hellish thing used to be taking a flight, especially long-haul, when the flying-time waiting was torture after also having had a 3 or 4-hour wait for check-in time before even boarding, then after landing there was immigration & customs clearance + baggage claim. I think there might in fact have been various 'air rage' incidents because of people no longer being able to light up during flights - it's one hell of an addiction.

Hardest part for me was being in the pub with a drink and not smoking but once I'd managed that a few times (and it was tough), the rest came fairly easily and I've never looked back. As partick says, you can then use the experience to make any other positive changes in your life. I got into smack, for example...

Best of luck Bathheader theres thousands of us👍🏻 I knocked the vapes on the head, it's just not the same when you've had a beer. Best way of weening yourself off vape is to not change your coil or buy a flavour you don't like- then you don't smoke it as much. I'm back on cigs but only when abroad or on a night out.

Best of luck Bathheader theres thousands of us👍🏻 I can never understand how people switch to vape but go back to cigs, but I know it’s super common and have seen it in family members.. For me, vaping has always more than satisfied the physical/emotional addiction of smoking, and would go as far to say I prefer it. I also think I’m more addicted to nicotine from vaping than when I was smoking, because I’ll sit at my desk chain vaping whereas I always smoked outside. I can only think that people making the switch don’t research/invest in a solid heavy duty e cig. If you get a good kit and then look around online and bulk order supplies, it’s prob 10% of the cost of smoking. If you get some shitty disposable then it’s probably close to the price of smoking with the added headache of your kit constantly packing in / not working properly. Definitely give the Nordic spirit a try mate. No guarantees you will enjoy it, and it’s def not as easy as switching from cig to vape IMO, but it’s worth a go.

I smoked for over 40 years from when 20 No6 were 21p, never really enjoyed it when they stopped making them, ended up on roll ups with a menthol filter. It wasn’t about the money for me as I used to get tobacco from abroad when it was really cheap, I realised how unfit I was, anyway….I’ve been vaping for at least 5 years but can’t get off it, it’s like a dummy, love it though with a pint or driving
When I was abroad loads of lads were using Tobacco pouches they tucked in their lip instead of smoking, apparently banned in certain countries cos they cause gum cancer, I use the fruit flavoured gum sometimes, it helps
Wouldn’t thank you for a fag now though but not sure how to kill the vaping off

Should have added, go to a vape shop, get a decent machine which gives a good throat hit, use Tabacco flavoured juice with equivalent nicotine to what you use now, ween down the nicotine over 12 months, then TRY to get off the vape….think of your health 👍

Two recent unrelated incidents brought home the effect of addiction and cost of smoking. Firstly a few months ago I was walking out of Derriford Hospital after having a CT scan for my ongoing cancer treatment when I spotted a middle aged lady sat smoking as on a wheel chair outside the hospital entrance. She was in pyjamas and house coat so was clearly in for treatment as an in-patient. To my horror she was pulling on the cigarette through a tracheostomy hole in her throat. If nothing else it shows the devastating effect of nicotine addiction when you cannot give up despite whatever was going on for her to have a tracheostomy. The second incident was couple of weeks ago I was in Morrisons queuing to buy a lottery ticket. The bloke in front of me paid £117 for a carton of 200 cigarettes. I was gobsmacked, that’s over eleven quid a pack.

i have managed to pack in twice when i started vaping but eventually the vape started not doing it for me and went back to the roll ups last time was Jan 2020 and i managed the first few weeks of lockdown smoke free but the fags crept back in
i do take pleasure more from the act of rolling a good fag than the smoking
have been thinking about going back to a juul vape again as you can refill them although last time i used one i ended up filling it with high thc content cbd liquid and spent all day at work battered!

If ever there was a case of cognitive dissonance or just outright denial that has to be it.

I stopped in May my habit of the past 53 Years. I have to say I've always enjoyed a cigarette but it was costing me the best part of £400 a month and various health issues culminating in a stroke on May 3rd . As much as I love a smoke I decided I had to stop being selfish and give my family as many years more as possible. So cold turkey and neverlooked back . Vapeing isnt stopping whatever people think its just keeping g you're dependency alive . You need to really want to do it .
I hear the government wants to ban smoking in 10 or so years . Good for them if so 👏

I’m happy for it to be earlier. The point still stands. Let those smokers smoke or give up but more importantly make it as hard as we can to stop new starters. Make Photo ID Compulsory for every purchase of Fags. And alcohol and gambling whilst we are at it
