Terrific goalscorer - one of the all time great players. I remember his winning goal in the 1974 World Cup Final v Holland.
Yet another reminder how time marches on.

And I remember his 3-2 winning goal in the quarter final against England at Mexico 70. Legend is a much over-used word but it certainly applies to him. RIP

A term devalued by over use but he really was world class.

A truly remarkable striker. Yet his reserved personality led to him being overlooked in the pantheons of the greats.
I had a mate who's job it was to mark Muller in a game. The instruction was to just stay with him all game. If he goes for a shit.... you can wipe his arse. Muller did very little and barely touched the ball. He'd go and stand in strange places on the pitch and stand still for several seconds at a time. My mate reckoned he was doing a great job as the game fizzed out to a 0-0 draw. Then 83rd minute a ball comes into the box on the corner of the six yard box. My mate had the angles covered but without him seeing Muller had somehow pivoted and got a shot in that went in the far corner of the net. My mate was flustered by this and a minute later Muller nabbed a second. He couldn't work out how but Muller won the game.
It's widely reckoned the Dutch 74 team should've won the trophy. But it overlooks the great players West Germany had. Muller made the difference in the final. As he often did throughout his glittering career.
RIP Der Bomber.

RIP We'd have won that game if our Gordon had been playing ! Peter Bonetti was in goal for a sick Gordon Banks, and England lost a 2-0 lead!

Choimian Fowler was the best player up here in my lad’s age group. We had an U-12 tournament. Told Fergus’ to put him on him for the game. Perfect result 0-0. Otherwise we would have lost 5-0. Just been released by a second tier Dutch team & didn’t realise he played a season for Cardiff U-23

Sad to hear he spent his last few years in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimers. Yet another ex-footballer who has died from that dreadful disease.
RIP Legend

RIP Gerd Mueller ... True Legend! Broke my nine year old heart in 1970. England had enough chances to win, plus a stone wall pen not given! This is well worth a watch:

An amazing goal scoring machine.
Germany's Jimmy Greaves.
I'm a bit shocked to see this today as I have posted his name twice recently.
He could be facing away from goal, turn on a sixpence, and screw back a shot in a flash, and always seemed to be on target. He seemed to have a gymnast's ability to manipulate his body into any position to kick the ball.
RIP Condolences to all his loved ones.

One of those players who looked nothing like a professional footballer was supposed to look, but put him in the penalty area and he was the most lethal finisher I have seen.
