Time for an upgrade, full HD but which brand. Done a bit of homework and there's a Sony Bravia 40" that fits the bill but whichever one I end up with, Panasonic, Toshiba it'll be a punt on reliability. £350 - £400 is a rough place I want to be with cost. It'll be an online purchase. Any experiences, thoughts appreciated.

Get a soundbar on this and you are golden.
TCL really grown in popularity over the last couple of years and with very good reason. Their Price/Performance is impeccable.

Not sure the brand matters much.
The key feature to get is a smart TV meaning one that connects to the internet so you can directly access the various TV apps like Netflix, Prime etc etc.

TCL really grown in popularity over the last couple of years and with very good reason. Their Price/Performance is impeccable. That's interesting. We bought a very expensive TV some years ago and the sound quality was very poor with resonating at certain frequencies. The fitters came and took it apart and put it together again and it was better, but not for long. I finished up talking to the top technical man at the electrical shop we bought it from. He said TVs have advances by leaps and bounds over the years visually, but manufacturers have generally neglected sound quality. Mainly due to making TV slimmer, lighter etc. they have "squeezed" the sound equipment, many TVs having tiny speakers pointing towards the floor! We got rid of the resonance in the end by turning down certain sound frequency settings. This is not really satisfactory as it means really you are using the inbuilt computer to compensate for the mechanical deficiency of the speaker design.

As long as it's not made in China you can get anything you want.
Philips would and will be my choice. Again.

Go into Richer Sounds if there's one nearby. The Customer Service is second to none and they'll help you out depending on what your budget/specific needs are. They'll price match as well if you see it cheaper elsewhere.......

Alternatively if you live near Stone try Euronics - guys know more about what they are talking about than Currys and are reasonably priced.
People will all no doubt have their favourite brands - but for picture quality I've always found Sony excellent. However downside of the one I have is a lot of the tech has dropped off through age but I upgraded that with a firestick and its good to go for a few years yet. Also have a Samsung which is much more flexible techwise but does let you down a bit if watching in SD (though fine in HD and 4k).

If they do, I agree that their people are excellent & very helpful - I had a very tall Bosch fridge & matching freezer from them a few years ago, plus two Panasonic combined DVD/Video recorder/players a few years before that, and as a retailer they were first-class. If Stone Euronics is the place I'm thinking of, one of their TV/DVD recorder/player chaps used to work at the actual Panasonic shop in Piccadilly, Hanley (where we had also been customers) & he certainly knew his stuff. I think his name was James. He could've moved on again by now, though!

We has a 40inch flat screen for many years then when UHD was invented we swapped for a 50 inch smart. The only downside for ours, which is now 6 years old, there are only limited apps. Would think new ones will have much more app choice.

Great advice ta. not too many things are available in 4k but BBC screen select events and programmes in 4k via iplayer, also if you have an amazon 4k firestick or equivalent then a lot can be streamed from them in higher resolution, most streaming services do offer a lot of the newer stuff in 4k now come to think of it, although netflix charge an extra fee for this.....

Dunno if all 4K's do this but my LG upscales both HD and SD. Not to 4K granted but an improvement on my old Panasonic (sorry ) HD tv. Some of those channels down with the dead men (Together, Smithsonian etc) are quite watchable in terms of quality if lacking content. The built in Amazon App screens 4K so have now ditched the Firestick.
