His ‘assist’ for Reading’s first goal pretty much summed him up. He was trying bless him but I lost count of the time he turned over possession. Summed a few up on here as wasn't even him He was still absolutely toss.

What actually happened? I knew it came off a Stoke player so could save myself at being outraged with the ref for ignoring the liner but not a clue as to what actually happened. The sentinel were blaming Fox for getting the ball caught under his feet but it was a shambolic defensive effort imo,why someone couldn't have just put their foot through it is beyond me.

I thought it was our best midfield display in many a year.
Loads more creativity through the middle and some nice through balls for Brown to run onto.
I hope we stick with this for a few games.
18 attempts at goal. Now that's entertainment.
I think Stoke fans have got too used to oulisball

The whole midfield isn't right if we're honest and Allen will be the fall guy for the fact that he is the only real genuine central midfielder in there. We literally handed the two inside channels to Readings wide men and full backs all game as Powell and Vrancic cannot and to be frank, should not be playing where there are. The fact that Reading are so shit meant we got away with it.
I've said it in another thread but all three players are the spare men in a three man midfield, and should be played alongside ( in Allen's case) and in front of (in Powell and Vrancic's case) two more mobile destroyer types. We are playing Allen as the deeper ball winner type infront of the back three with two number 8's in Powell and Vrancic. That isn't Allen's game nor is it Powell's game. Vrancic at a push alongside the right man. At the very least we could play Allen and Vrancic alongside a destroyer. How we are playing now will eventually set them all up to fail. Eventually Vrancic will be bypassed, Powell will be sucked deeper rendering his creativity null and void and Allen will be hung out to dry. Everything is new at the moment but we all know that when cracks appear if they aren't corrected they get bigger over time. A proper top end Championship side will absolutely steam roller that midfield.
I'm no fan of Allen at all, especially post relegation, but to slaughter him for his performance in 'that' midfield is totally unfair IMO.
Win or no win, it's crap and it needs changing.
Fair assessment.

You really don’t need to over analyse why he was so poor. Giving the ball away, passing into touch, getting caught in possession and horrendous first touches can not be down to other players. He is poor. End of story.

That for me is a fair assessment. I thought midfield was at times being bullied (all) and somehow gaps were being exploited by Reading. It’s early doors, I’m looking forward to 31 August and a few more games to be able to comment constructively

Sigh.... Didn't take long before we had a "bashing of somebody" thread, after what was possibly our best display for at least over a season, and it was odds on it was always going to be Allen!!!
Personally, I don't think Allen was bad at all today!!!

Personally, I don't think Allen was bad at all today!!! We were good first half but the second was poor. It was very much like the second half of last season but with one difference. That difference being MON made changes like he should have been doing back then and it gave us the lift we needed. Good to see the manager has hopefully learned that.

Joe gives maximum effort there is no doubt. He is always looking to receive the ball which is admirable. I like these qualities very much. His distribution, however, is largely embarrassing. He needs to fix this. Quickly.

Not to mention the fitness issue. Vrancic is noted as an 'impact' player who shines for half an hour and Powell rarely finishes a game. It seems sensible to use them in tandem, rather than alongside one another.

Yeah, by all means numpty, but this thread hasn't really been about discussing where we can improve has it... It's just largely been a Joe Allen bashing thread following a decent TEAM performance!!! Vrancic had a good debut game today, but could that have been because he felt comfortable with Allen behind him??? Like I say, I personally don't think Allen was bad at all today!!!

And I thought the second half was a shit show for the most part tbh. Combination of us not being able to do owt with the ball and the ref stopping play every 2 minutes. But he responded and the subs got us cruising again. And it was a totally deserved win. Overall I was impressed today but there were some clear issues, there always is. And Allen was the most obvious. For me today that was the Allen I know and despise. It was all there.

I watched the game on a stream in Australia.
Went to bed happy
Woke up and read this thread and thought I must of dreamt Stoke won.
Could all 3 in midfield have played better ?
Probably but we won , we created more chances in that game than we did in 1/2 dozen games last year.
Enjoy the win and enjoy we bought a youngster who scored on debut.

Two of them being our more flair midfielders in Powell and Vrancic (who had good games), Allen stayed on, and like you say, the subs got the team cruising again!!! I personally have more of an issue with Brown, I see him as nothing better than a league one player at best.... But credit where its due today, he played well!!!

The problem today wasn't Allen it was defending the left channel where they targeted Fox who proved himself totally inept at defending a quick, long, straight ball for their forward to run onto. Wasn't the only mistake in the lead up to their first goal but his was the initial one. Hopefully that will be sorted with the return of Souttar. I thought there were a couple of occasions when Allen did brilliantly at defending the box and he made a nuisance of himself even when he couldn't win the ball. His weakness was his passing.

I don’t think Powell played that well. Great finish but bar that thought he was lacking today. Second half we didn’t have the control like we did in the first but I never felt threatened by Reading. It was just two poor sides playing at that point. Brown encapsulated the game for me with his performance. Thought he was great first half, poor second and like the Brown we saw on the telly. It was an easy win though, made difficult by some stupid errors. Good building blocks. Clear issues with keeping the ball if you have Batth and Allen there imo. Their second is really bad. No one is near him at any stage until it comes to Smith and Moore has had a 20 yard run on him. Really odd goal. So bad organisationally. But it was never going to be perfect and it was a lot better than I expected. And I expected us to win tbh. But not so well.

I don't think Reading really offered anything, I think we were more undone by ourselves rather than Reading!!! Powell was the least effective of the two (Vrancic and himself), and Brown was much better in the first half, but never stopped running in the second, even if he was less effective!!! As for the Ref.....well, he was a whole different ball game, or he at least seemed like he was watching a whole different ball game!!!
