I've not seen it yet and you haven't been bothered to post a photo so I feel as this should be my opening stance.

If you can't see it that's your problem not mine.... Well it didn't appear on my screen but it has now so I blame Proboards. My only knowledge of it was someone on the radio the other day saying they'd paid to go up it and the view wasn't that good. Now I've seen it, you'd have to be a complete moron to pay good English pounds sterling to walk up a small hill in a city which is filled with historical landmarks, many of which are free to visit. I completely agree with you.

If enough tourists pay to walk up it and that covers the costs or if Londoners who voted the mayor in pay for it, I ain't too bovvered as I'll probably never see it [live] but if a penny of my taxes paid for it then I'm outraged.

let's be honest , recent new developments in London aren't the easiest on the eye. New York etc seem to get it right, London looks like an 8 year old in a painting contest designed them. This was possibly based on Marble Arch at dawn by Rodney Trotter. They can stick a giant size , glow in the dark statue of John Inman up for all I care as don't have to se it every day.

They are trying something new to bring people back into the city. I suspect the artist impressions looked amazing. It looks like the execution has not lived up to expectations… at least at this moment. I’m a great believer in art installations They can be amazing; big scale things like the Kelpies to more modest, but no less awesome, efforts like the Charles Rennie Macintosh statue next door to my flat in Glasgow. It’s easy to get into Daily Mail mode when things go wrong, but we need to cut a little slack as teething problems get sorted or we get used to the actual installation. Even when things turn out bad, we have to accept that not everything works.

Not quite sure what "getting into the Daily Mail mode" means, I was genuinely asking what the thought process behind it was as it currently looks like an absolute dogs dinner, if it's just for the overview of the city isn't that what the London Eye is for? Whilst I accept that things don't always work out, partly blocking the iconic Marble Arch just makes no sense whatsoever..........

I like the contrast between really old and new architecture when it's done right it looks brilliant. The Jewish Museum in Berlin and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg are two great examples of this. I'm all for any design or innovation that adds to an area, it doesn't even have to be my cup of tea but unless they do some serious work on this monstrosity it may need ripping down and starting again......

The Guggenheim another one that sprung to mind, looks far more impressive in the flesh so to speak but NY not obviously as historic as London or Berlin in any sense. Jewish Museum a great example, yep

As for the Marble Arch mound, really can't see the point. Plenty of better London view points I suspect.

I anticipate more accidents, Marble arch, Park Lane, Oxford Street and heading West was always difficult at the best of times, now there's something to look at!. My police section house was just over the road from there so that's a view that won't be the same again.

Absolutely correct as it’s blocking the view on foot from Speaker’s Corner, which has the best perspective of the arch. The mound also just seems to be so out of sorts with its location too. Hard to say really without actually seeing it for real, but the pictures do look appalling.

Is Marble Arch really that much of a tourist attraction? One of those places have driven past and not really bothered to pay much if any attention to. Is like a rubbish Arc de Triomphe

Worth noting, it’s a temporary installation, part of a series of actions looking to attract people back to the city after lockdown.

Each to their own, I'm not that struck on the artists impression either although safe to say it looks 10 times better than the reality......

Every so often London goes a bit mental and sticks something in which is either great or complete shite!
The Millennium Dome - was shite. A mate got free tickets, it was crap. Now a decent music venue.
The London Eye - massive opposition initially to something which has become highly popular and a landmark.
This pyramid mound bollocks - can't see it going the same way as the Eye. Perhaps they could bury Brenda in it when she karks it, like a modern day pharaoh!

The ticket price has been scrapped for August and it's now free.
This is a fair and amusing Twitter thread on it:
The same guy went back yesterday and apparently the gate staff didn't know it's now free to go up. Despite being free, it'd still only attracted less than 100 visitors.

The bizarre thing is they've done it to attract people into the city post lockdown which I get, but for £2m you could basically subsidise travel on public transport and allow school kids and their families into venues that normally charge for free. They would then in turn spend money in nearby restaurants, cafes, visit other attractions etc. Just seems like a complete waste of time, money and effort.........

The alternative you suggested is too much common sense. I don't even get that they thought the mound would attract visitors to London, but nothing surprises me in terms of wasting money. I sadly find the mound hilarious, and those bins, fence, cones and warning sign top it off. If I'm in London and nearby, I'll visit because it's so crap.

Any bets on when the first stabbing will take place on that monstrosity? They should start with the person who 'designed' it - then the one who signed on the dotted line authorising the go-ahead.

That literally makes me feel ill. Whose idea was this monstrosity? How long will it be staying? How big a job will it be to remove it? And at what cost? Another £2 M??? Then again........ if it stays and shrubs planted on it grow and develop leaves they'll get blown on to the paths round the base of it, then with the rain they'll get slippery and people will slip and slide on them, and will fall over on the concrete paths and injure themselves...... Woo! Com-pen-say-shun time!
