Unless I'm Reading this wrong Saturday is the last programme we're producing in it's current format and moving to a smaller free programme. With maybe a digital offering as well? (although doesn't state that) ProgrammesAn exciting new campaign of Championship football is fast-approaching - and big changes are planned for the Official Matchday Programme too. For starters, you can celebrate the long-awaited return of fans to bet365 Stadium for a league game by INCLUDING YOUR NAME in the special ‘Welcome Back’ edition of the programme now in production. This one-off programme will feature an extended cover. The programme will cost £3.50 at the game, but you can add your name to the Back With A Bang roll call that will be printed in each copy by pre-ordering your copy for £5 - inclusive of p+p to a UK address*. To order your copy, visit www.ignitionsportsmedia.com or click HERE. Orders made after 1pm on Wednesday on August 4th will not be included in the roll call. What’s more, the ‘Welcome Back’ edition will be the last programme for a league game that attending fans will have to pay for as we will be introducing our new Freemium Matchday Magazine from the Nottingham Forest game on August 21st - and every supporter will be able to pick up a copy absolutely free! So, as the curtain come down on the traditional programme, make sure you get your copy to mark the start of an exciting new season - and the end of a programme era. NOTE: *The name to be included in the roll call will be taken from your order details and copies will be posted out on Friday August 6th, so are unlikely to arrive before the game. Orders to non-UK addresses will attract an additional postage charge.

From a sponsorship perspective, perhaps the club will make more money from increased distribution figures when compared to charging for the programme with less distributed. Though "freemium" must mean there will still be a charge for the new programme - perhaps that's where the roll call comes in, birthdays, marriage announcements etc. Posting the programmes seems a bit ridiculous given they may not arrive in time for the match.

Not surprised a good few clubs went that way last season. The trouble with digital medium is people tend not to bother - unless they really have to and a pdf with a few player interviews and a commercial page doesn't really do it for a lot of people. Another thing killed by Covid.

I think a free, slightly less bulky programme would be fine. You can still get a souvenir if you want and the big expensive ones were too much I think.

It's definitely a matchday tradition but I guess it's just a sign of the times. How many people actually re-read a programme if they're being honest, unless it has some meaning like a Bday announcement or family who has been a mascot etc?!
I got every Prem programme home and away from our first season (purely coz I thought that one season would be a one off!) but they are all boxed up & in the loft! Yeah I can say I've got them but what really am I ever going to do with them?!
The last few seasons I've always bought the first home programme of the season & generally that's been it.
As have just spoke about on another thread, yeah it seems sad in theory but lifes moved on since programmes I guess. Same as where as once Teletext results service, The Green'un & even the Oatcake fanzine were once a vital ingredient of a match day, times have long moved on. Anyone remember the extortionate priced Stoke City Clubcall that used to exist in the late 80's?! Used to include all club and ticket news, player and manager interviews etc! Remember calling it once & such a telling off once the phone bill came through never used it again!

They are more of a magazine now. When I first started going in the 1960s you bought one as it gave you a reasonable indication of the team. You could get the rest of the content (less ads) on a single side of A4. Away programmes were a bit of a trophy to take to school on Monday. I keep on thinking I'll get rid of my old programmes but I can't bear to somehow. So many memories.

(although doesn't state that) I'm not reading it like that. I think the new 'Freemium' matchday program is a digital offering and not a smaller free paper based program. I know it says 'pick up a copy' but there are ways and means of picking up a copy which don't involve anything physical like paper. (I may be wrong too, I usually am!)

I can't help but feel that football clubs ruined programmes for themselves, really. Of course, this is a sign of the times, all printed media is in the decline now, in every context. But making programmes into glossy-paged magazines that were full of fluff nobody wanted to read, and (more importantly) sold for best part of a fiver, transformed them from little keepsakes that everybody wanted to collect as part of an essential matchday experience, and into a product that a family on a budget would inevitably think twice about buying.
Should have kept them short, and paperback. With a few notes on the opposition, a word from the manager, and an interview with a squad player. Keep the printing costs down but sold for a quid. I honestly believe that more people would have brought them that way, if only for tradition's sake, you'll never convince me otherwise.

The only time I ever buy a match programme these days is at non league games and they still are simple and short. A little information about the clubs that you can’t easily find anywhere else but mainly a momento of attendance. BM

On the link to order one it says it’s sold out!
How can that be the case when the club says the deadline to order one with you name printed in it is Wednesday 1pm?

Most clubs are going to a monthly magazine style.

I'm quite gutted, I've never really had the chance to get a season ticket so I've gotten a programme from every match I've ever been to.

I got one from the two games at Wembley a decade ago (!) as a souvenir but honestly, what programme content do you actually want?
Ghostwritten comments from the manager and captain
Oppositipn player profiles that, based on my experience of programmes at away games, are largely fictional
Stats that are now freely available online
Interviews with local media figures
Information about mascots and birthdays
I can't say that much of that really holds any appeal. Maybe there's an exception for the death edition at new year.

I'll have to have a word with the Union if I'm being made redundant, wonder what my pay off is after 30 years service 🤔

I’ve always thought matchday programs are a bit shit, nothing on The Oatcake, but I will miss hearing “proooooGRAM” on matchday.

You are right a lot of clubs have been doing this for a while now. I just think the clubs don't put in any effort, or imagination when it comes to programmes. It's a very tired format because of the lack of engaging content. So I'm not surprised the whole concept is being reviewed.
