You are deffo geographically challenged, JR. Patterdale is a village on the shore of Ullswater which is the start point for some climbs up Helvellyn. It also has a breed of dog named after it - the Patterdale Terrier. My ex colleague Gina (who was drop dead gorgeous as it happens) was married to Peter Dobing's brother Brian, who was also a pretty decent footballer but who never played as a professional as far as I know. I used to work with a gal who's uncle played for Stoke with Dobing oddly but can't remember his name. Was a CB am sure but coming to the end of his career. I Did look him up once and he played a lot of games, before my time. Was so long back Patterdale was just a settlement for gold prospectors and the dog hadn't been invented. Was the centre back Eddie Stuart? He was a centre half and captain in our promotion season in 62/63 and stayed with us until the end of the 63/64 season so he would have over lapped for a year with Dobing. He may have lived in Newcastle - he certainly owned a Chinese Restaurant in Newcastle. My girlfriend and I had a few meals there and Eddie was always happy to chat about games - even on Saturday evenings when you would have thought he would be too knackered to turn up in the restaurant. Nice chap - the first South African I ever met. I don't think I met another one until 10 or so years later

I must ask her, she lives local and have the number of a friend of hers. I looked him up in one of those A to Z of player's books years ago. I imagine he would be a local boy as think her family are. Alsager area I think originally

From a happier time before we started gumming rubbish on football kit and making it out of polyester in a Bengali sweatshop! RIP Terry Cooper Is that Skeels making the tackle? And, how come Peter Dobing never had a hair out of place? A bit of random information - I worked in Crewe with Peter's sister-in-law, Gina, whilst Peter was in his pomp at Stoke. It's a bit before my time Lakeland but I was torn between Skeels and Elder but I think you are right, it's the more rugged looking Skeels, Elder was more baby faced. Peter Dobing and his immaculate hair! A man so smooth you were almost surprised he didn't bring his famous pipe out on the pitch with him!
